BBC Young Folk Award finalists 2009, Jaywalkers - Michael Giverin (21) Jay Bradberry (17) – play an " addictive mix of equal parts folk and bluegrass, the duo are refreshingly different and not to be missed" (Spiral Earth). Originating from the Bluegrass hotbed of Helsby, just outside of Chester, Michael and Jay began playing together at the weekly Thursday night jam sessions at the ex-Servicemen’s club. After a few years spent playing together in weekend scratch bands they formed as a duo in the summer of 2008. Since reaching the Young Folk Award Finals they have gone on to play at many UK folk festivals including Broadstairs, Bideford, Fylde, Coastline and Wirral Folk on the Coast as well as radio appearances on BBC Radio Lancashire’s ‘The Drift’ with Phil Brown and Oldham Community Radio’s folk programme with Ali O’Brien. At the recent ‘Bluegrass and Beyond’ festival at the Brindley Arts centre, Runcorn, as well as playing their own spot, they performed with 12 times ‘IBMA Dobro Player of the Year’, Rob Ickes (Blue Highway) forming part of his band that headlined the weekend. . “I was highly impressed with Jay Bradberry's blues-tinged, world-weary country vocals and splendid fiddle playing when I thought she was in her early 20s. To discover she was only 16 years old gave me shivers down the spine. "Sixteen? Surely not!" What a brilliant future awaits that distinctive voice. Co-performer Michael Giverin was wonderful, too, with his thrash funk and country mandolin grooves. Creative compositions and original arrangements put a refreshing twist on traditional styles, demonstrating a formidable innovative talent.” . . . Article written by www.thisisnorthdevon.co.uk on 20th August 2009 "A wonderful evening which kept the audience fully entertained." Bromborough Folk Club (http://bromfolk.blogspot.com/) “As someone who has run folk clubs for many years, I can heartily recommend this young duo - they get better each time I hear them. We will certainly have them back." Roger Parker – host of Folk at the Manor (http://www.folkatthemanor.co.uk/)
