The Milano Hot Jazz Orchestra was founded in January 1997 by Jack Russo, Paolo Gaiotti and Claudio Perelli. The purpose of the three above musicians was to recall the original atmosphere of the classic jazz just as it had been created by the various bands during the "roaring twenties" in Chicago and New Orleans. In order to be able to do this, it has been indispensable to have recourse to an accurate study of the various sounds of the specific musical "epoch"; such an initiative was made possible both by the use of a peculiar instrument called washboard (this is just a common washboard of the past, rhythmically scratched by means of metal thimbles put on one's fingers) and by the presence in the front-line of two trumpets instead of one.
The sound of the "ORCHESTRA" is characterised by several sung tunes and by various musical nuances obtained thanks to the presence in the Band of musicians being able to play up to four different instruments each.
The repertory of the "M.H.J.O." contains the early tunes of Duke Ellington ("Jubilee stomp", "A gipsy without a song", "Accordion Joe"), many tunes of the Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra ("Sugar", "It's the darnest thing","Mississipi roll on"), various hits of the MCKinney's Cotton Pickers ("Save it pretty mama", "Do something") without forgetting several tunes of the classic jazz like "Of all the wrongs you've done to me","Alligator crawl", "So little time so much to do" and so forth.
