Influences
Obviously Miles Davis and his contributions to Jazz and modern music as a whole
stand out in our minds. We like to think about what we call the Miles family tree, Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, John Scofield, Mike Stern, Dave Holland.....this list could gone on for pages!
Sounds Like
This a guitar based trio in the mold of Mike Stern and John Scofield.
Miles Ahead is a jazz trio formed by guitarist Matt Underwood, bassist Jeremiah Hamilton, and drummer John Chupin in 1998. A former music teacher at Montgomery County College, Matt is a sought after teacher of the guitar throughout Houston. Matt also is a core member of the praise and worship band for Fellowship of the Woodlands church. Jeremiah studied at both Berklee College of Music and North Texas State University. During the 1970's he worked most of the major show clubs around the US, including long stints in house bands in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Into the 80's and 90's Jeremiah took a side road and became a successful sound engineer with such artists as Jimmie Vaughan, Tower of Power, The O'Jays, Levert, Stephanie Mills and many more. In 2002 he decided to take a break from touring to refocus on his music and Miles Ahead. John Chupin has been a mainstay in the Houston music scene and is well known for his work with the jazz/rock innovators Moses Guest. Currently, Miles Ahead is working on original material and we plan to have our first cd recorded and available soon.
