Death to MiLkBabY! LONG LIVE MiLkBabY!

Tue Oct 28 2008
Press release from Barry Bennett of MiLkBabY:

What is this my beloved?!? What are you saying??
I am saying that after 11 years, 5 albums, and thousands of miles on the van; MiLkBabY will cease to be an active band. Are you sad? I am too, a little; but I also feel liberated and excited.
Sometimes a name, an entity, can carry baggage and actually put pressure on people you love.

Probably going all the way back to when the “classic” MiLkBabY broke apart with davidly and tracee leaving town, there has been one hidden ingredient in all the wonderful yummy things that I have been blessed to do with my MiLkBabY band mates: fear. Fear of letting something that loved and that was special go. Fear of starting over. Fear of change. I hid all this fear from myself even as I did go and create new things (things we loved doing) with darren and sophie and Kristin, but the fear (as it always does) holds us back and this shadow ghost of MiLkBabY kept hanging over the shoulder of the new MiLkBabY. Lately, that shadow is blocking too much of the light. It took great conversations with Darren for me to realize that this. MiLkBabY can be the seed, but it has to grow into something new. I am a slow learner, but at least I learn!

What is that seed going to grow into??
Well, Kristin Reeves and I have decided to finally cultivate a little sprout that popped up a while ago and it was left unattended.
We want to grow into something that goes beyond “band”. We want to grow….

THE IMPENDING BEHAVIOR ORCHESTRA.

What is The Impending Behavior Orchestra?
Well here is our mission:

The Impending Behavior Orchestra is a modular sound / light/ movement performance group based in Chicago led by musician/composer/sound designer Barry Bennett along with video artist, Kristin Reeves. IBO is modular in the sense that it can manifest itself in many forms and purposes. As few as two or as many as 10 collaborators. IBO can manifest as a concert in a club, an interactive piece of dance theater, a component of a full theatrical production, full on frenzy or as still as a gallery installation. IBO is interested in the impulse of the artist and how it makes them behave in the ritual of live performance. Does the idiosyncratic impulse of the artist/musician/dancer create the vision / behavior, or does the behavior create the idiosyncrasies? Chicken or Egg? Symbiosis?

IBO believes in improvisation.
IBO believes in chaos and synchronicity walking hand in hand.
IBO believes in action / reaction.
IBO believes in simultaneous play.
IBO believes in ritual.
IBO believes in crossing disciplinary boundaries.
IBO believes we are members of a tribe.
IBO believes in IBO. IBO believes in YOU.

Right now, IBO does not have an official site yet, but IBO does have a myspace site: MYSPACE SITE: myspace.com/theimpendingbehaviororchestra Please visit and friend us up. Once we really get rolling, the content will change often on that site.

Sounds Like From the outermost fringes of the Trip-Hop world where the borders between it and improv jam-bands, ambient, trance and dub electricians and menacing industrialists overlap and begin to rub off on one another comes MiLkBabY ... a strange sort of world music for a new science fiction-esque post industrial world ... The Eternals, Qwel - now MiLkBabY. Indie music has become a valuable export of the windy city.--- JustAddNoise.com **** TO SEE WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO SAY, VISIT http://milkbaby.net

Founded in late ‘97 by percussionist / vocalist / sonic sculptor, Barry Bennett; MiLkBabY celebrates it's TENTH YEAR as a music making entity in 2007 with the release of MiLkBabY's 5TH FULL LENGTH ALBUM, "BottLe" on Uvulittle Records (http://uvulittle.com). The album mainly features tracks from MiLkBabY’s latest live incarnation, a rocking psychedelic trio with Bennett; bassist / guitarist, Darren Shepherd ( belmondos, trans alarm ); and Sophie Senard (belmondos) on accordian, vocals, thai gongs and whatever else she can get her little french hands on. The album will also features some performances from "classic" MiLkBabies, David Lee Smith and Tracee Westmoreland, who did sessions with Bennett in Chicago while visiting from Berlin and Brussels repectively. "BottLe" is MiLkBabY's best work to date. Having been features on WXRT's Local Anesthetic, it looks to stand tall in MiLkBabY's impressive body of work that includes numerous theatre and dance scores in addtion to MiLkBabY's previous 4 albums. In the meantime, look for MiLkBabY to keep bringing their legendary transcendental live shows to their diverse grassroots following. MiLkBabY’s music is strange and unique, but firmly captivating; creating a tribal bond with their audience during their nearly FULLY IMPROVISED rock shows. People love to see them again and again knowing that each night is a new experience birthed by the little BabY that could…

THE REVIEWS ARE COMING IN FOR OUR NEW ALBUM, BottLe!!

Local trio MiLkBabY have just put out the fifth release of their ten-year career: BottLe, on Uvulittle. I'm enjoying this record a lot—a soundtrack for a scattered afternoon, chill-out music for people who wouldn't know "chilling out" if you shoved them in a meat locker. Part trance, part trip-hop, part sheer fingerpainting solipsism, its swirls and chants and burbles tease the pattern-making part of the brain. Find the logic—it's got to be in there somewhere. In the meantime, if you just can't focus, they'll make you feel good about not having to. --- Monica Kendrick, CHICAGO READER

BottLe marks a significant turning point for MiLkBaby, the trippy Chicago-based progressive trio that plays fully improvised live shows. For one, it’s easily the most accessible album in the group's decade-long history. And it also marks the first collaboration between founding multi-instrumentalist Barry Bennett, bassist/guitarist Darren Shepherd and his singing girlfriend/accordion player Sophie Senard in the wake of the departure of Tracee Westmoreland and David Lee Smith — who changed continents in 2001. The result? More than 66 minutes of cacophonic, percussion-punctuated music that conjures mangled and bloody sonic images of vintage Peter Gabriel, beginning with the global paranoia of “Up on the Television” and extending to “Sneaky Stevie,” with its distorted guitars, hypnotic beats, fluttery vocals and electronic chaos that sound like the mix tape for a science experiment gone horribly awry. There's even some male death-metal grunts in "Bored." “Radiation Flowing” is a more subdued piece complete with atonal chanting and augmented by jarring and repeated sounds of breaking glass – a bottLe being smashed, perhaps? The 11-minute “More Than I Am” emerges as the album’s most haunting piece, with Senard’s mournful, digitized voice singing over a somber Gabriel-esque rhythm, “Tell the Moon” sounds like a bunch of sheep and goats being herded by stoned shepherds, and the 12-minute finale “Greater Than Two” (apparently a parent’s ode to a young daughter) is alternately bittersweet and terrifying. Former MiLkBabies Westmoreland and Smith make guest appearances here, but it is clear that Bennett is the one spinning this bottle and taking MiLkBaby in commendable new directions. You can’t help but clap your hands and shake your ass. -----Michael Popke, SEA OF TRANQUILITY
