Chronology of Miller Creek by Simmons:
I’m pretty sure I met my five musical soul mates in a past life in a galaxy far away. One has passed to his next life, but we feel him walk with us every step of the way. Blake is my number one musical inspiration and was my best friend.
Blake and I went to the same high school in suburban Memphis. Looking for adventure, we moved to a derelict farmhouse with no central heating on the edge of Missoula MT. The farmhouse had one paramount attribute that trumped its countless shortcomings. There were no neighbors. We could play all night and no one would hear a thing. Well, almost no one…
Blake and I heard about a guy who played the bass. Massie (soul mate two) was the man we’d been looking for. Fervently enthusiastic about the collaboration, we began playing together all the time. Soon after, Tom Ritzman (soul mate three) joined the group filling the void with his heart-pounding drum notes. The farmhouse had a garage that was detached from the house and stood approximately 100 yards away. This distance paled in comparison to Massie’s thunderous bass notes. Our roommate couldn’t take anymore; something had to be done about the endless rumbling coming from the garage. Together we built a band room inside the garage in order to contain the insanity and appease our roommate. The construction of this room provided me with some of the fondest memories of my life and was a metaphoric representation of lifelong bonds as friends and musicians. It represented the construction of our future. Blissful autumn afternoons swinging hammers, drinking Budweiser, listening to Panic, dreaming, and working together towards the same goal made us all realize that no one would ever stop us from playing music. That place and time will forever be held sacred in my heart. That place was called Miller Creek ..........
“Life is what happens while you’re making other plans.”- John Lennon...........
Fast forward six years. The original foursome was now spread across the world separated by miles and responsibilities. Massie and I remained together as we always have and will. Over the years, we went through a few different members, but no one really fit. We had been gaining popularity but treading water creatively. Soul mates four and five came as a package deal. Both Tom and I, and Jared and James, were dissatisfied with the current states of our respective bands and decided to join forces. The four of us realized the first time we jammed it was meant to be. We had found our home, our musical soul mates.............
Improv:
Improvisation is like the elegant dance of the Lolo barn and swallows on a midsummer evening’s sunset; seemingly haphazard to the average human onlooker, but gracefully calculated for a purpose undefined. They weave in and out of a tightly knit oblong ballet, acrobatic and precise, relying on the whole, but with individual contributions as the heart of their playful song. They talk to each other without words. They complement each other as one climbs high and one soars low, ever mindful that they are only humble parts of a whole.
Just like that, they’re gone, but not far. They’ll be back tomorrow.
Their simplicity comforts me. Their complexity intrigues me. But it is their purpose that eludes me. Perhaps, purpose is an underrated concept.
if your not playing on halloween you should come up to hotsprings and party with us at the symes. soak in the springs and get out of missoula. happy halloween

I just wanted to tell you that I miss Blake everyday with my whole soul. It's hard to get down to the music with so many memories attached to it, but I think that Big Sky sounds beautiful. Thank you for posting it.
