   About Milt Buckner
Milt Buckner, born in St. Louis on July 10, 1915, had a long and productive career as one of the handful of jazz musicians to enjoy success and demonstrate equal facility as both a pianist and an organist. Though born in the Gateway City, Buckner was raised in Detroit, and got his first professional job with McKinney's Cotton Pickers before he was out of his teens. Later, he went on to work with famed vibist Lionel Hampton for many years. He also recorded a number of albums as a leader, and later in his career worked as a session musicians and sideman with Illinois Jacquet, Roy Eldridge, Jo Jones, Buddy Tate, Arnett Cobb and many other artists, moving freely between the worlds of jazz, R&B and pop. As a pianist, Buckner was one of the early proponents of the "locked hands" style of playing later made famous by George Shearing. As an organist, he built on the work of Fats Waller and "Wild Bill" Davis, often using the organ orchestrally to make a small ensemble sound like a big band, and putting more emphasis on a variety of tonal colors than on fleet-fingered solo runs. Jimmy Smith cited Buckner as an early influence, although at 5'2" tall, Buckner's legs were too short to enable him to even attempt the fast-moving pedal bass lines that became one of Smith's trademarks. An exuberant performer who connected instinctively with an audience, Buckner continued to record and tour, often in Europe, until shortly before his death in Chicago on July 27, 1977. A good deal of his music is still in print, including compilations of his work from the 40s and 50s and some full length CDs recorded later in his career. Director David Lynch used Buckner's composition "The Beast" in the film Mulholland Drive, and several Buckner tracks from the 50s and 60s have appeared on various themed compilations of lounge and "space age pop" music.

Thanks for adding "The Late, Late Show! Lately I've been playing that song a lot on my M3 through a reappropriated Leslie speaker. It ain't Milt but I try to play it in his spirit. Also "Robbin's Nest" is a nice one.
Thanks for a great page!

"Round Midnight" is up again! Thanks! It's always great to hear Milt's reading of the classic Monk tune. And I really enjoy "The Late Late Show" too.
Wonderful stuff!

Glad to hear "The Beast" back up and going again! Now, if you'd just re-add "Round Midnight"...That was one of the most incredible readings of that tune I'd ever heard.

Hello!
Thanks for the add on this very nice blog about the great Milt BUCKNER.
With the combination of his famous block chords, his very personnal registrations on the hammond organ, and his use of the expression pedal, Milt was (and still is) immediatly recognizable.
In the sixties, he was famous in France and as a kid I had the chance to see him pretty often on TV (even on youth programs !), playing organ or piano as well, mostly in a somehow developped "boogie style".
Nowadays, even with the come back of Hammond,I don't feel anyone has tried again those types of sounds and playing ...?
Thanks again for this site.
All the best!

I have recently been bestowed an old Hammond organ, and am turning to the spirit of the late, great Milt Buckner for guidance! Ah, for so long I've wanted a Hammond (w. Leslie and rotor effects), and now I have one!!

Thanks For The Add, and for paying tribute to THE MAN!!!
Everyone be sure to listen to "Bernie's Tune" all the way through. The first 2 minutes and 10- seconds are Arnett Cobb's version with Milt on piano, BUT THEN Milt's version from "Rockin' With Milt" kicks in, WHOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Mind Blowing Hammond Tones!!! Killer Bird-like sax from Danny Turner, too.
SAVOR!
