Mindy Sotiri writes tunes. And plays them. Quite often in front of other people.
Mindy has recorded two albums over the last few years. Accidental Invitation (February 2003) and Drink It (September 2004) both distributed through MGM. In 2007, she also had three songs selected for the soundtrack of hit indie film 'All My Friends Are Leaving Brisbane'. She is currently a few tunes in to the recording of her third album, due for release in early 2010.
Album number three has had an outrageously long, four year, gestation period. During this time Mindy took regular gig maternity leave, ate an inordinate amount of chocolate, slept in short insomniac bursts and wrote a stack of new songs about sleep deprivation and breast-feeding. She realises this is very un-rock, and anticipates a return to songs about tortured relationships and drug addiction some time soon. But right now she finds the domestic brutally inspiring.
Mindy has over a decades worth of live experience. She has played sell out gigs at luminous Sydney venues like the Basement and the Vanguard, and supported many successful artists (including recently David Bridie, Chris Smither, and Abby Dobson). She also has played on a regular basis to a scattering of emotional hecklers and exhausted bar staff. She likes it both ways.
Mindy's music might best be described as hard-ish folk. Which is to say, that although she mostly plays with her fingers and messes around with tunings, she does not do a good line in lilting third person narratives.
Smart playing, engaging lyrics and a unique voice, her tunes- and live shows have enormously wide appeal. Although they are particularly enjoyed by girls prone to drunken weeping.
Aside from making music, Mindy is mostly interested in prisons and babies. She holds a PhD from the University of New South Wales, works regularly in the community sector as a research consultant on criminal justice issues, and teaches social work students about the ins and outs of life in NSW prisons. The rest of the time (Dr) Mindy can usually be found under a tree at a park somewhere in the inner west of Sydney wiping snot and vegemite off the faces of her children.
