fiercely non-fashionable hook laden punk rock
As far as rock bands go, you can’t get better or more exciting than The Minions. This ensemble have been developing their sound over the years and this all results in rock steady beats and furiously spun Ska/Punk that’s been moulded into a series of rousing anthems, delivered with catchy melodies. The Minions are far from a one trick pony though. They have big rock songs and interesting tales of everyday life all delivered with various kinds of flavours. With a fantastic brass section to spice the whole plot up, each and every performer is locked into concocting this special kind of magical brew of classic soul and soundbites of heavy, fire breathing pop. When this all comes together it really is quite spectacular, combining great song writing with astonishing showmanship. You can’t help but wish that all bands had this level of conviction, fun and animation within them – for now I’m more than happy for The Minions to gloriously fly the flag on this one. manchestermusic.co.uk
It would be too easy, more so unfair, to liken these lads and girl to Madness. If you can imagine Lalo Schifrin, writer of mammoth movie scores, conducting an orchestra incorporating the shredding guitar of the Macc Lads, the super cool trumpet of Al Hirt and the two tone insanity of Bad Manners (and why wouldn't you?) then you'll be close, at least in spirit, to The Minions.

We don’t want rich kids staring at their shoes, moaning softly to us. We want acts that know how to have a good time on stage; music which has a bit of vitality. The Minions, an unsigned band from Bolton, have this by the gallon.

Their nine strong line up threatens to overspill from the stage, but there’s a nice big space for their punk infused ska and brassy orchestrations, to blast out into the very corners and into the pop memorabilia stuck on the walls. There’s a growl here, a narration there, but for the best part Minions have a keg full of exciting, fun-filled anthems. The boisterous moments are spontaneous but superbly structured and there’s definitely three or four, maybe more really, good singles in their set. As you’d imagine this is a full, burgeoning sound, but everyone this side of the stage seemed to have a smile on their face as well as a dance in their step. Minions without doubt, should and must be much much bigger than they are now...another definite five star sound from Bolton.

THE MINIONS – Six Chords / Have You Got A Knife? (Yola) – More right to the bone energy from Bolton, and a classic contradiction of a double A side. Six Chords is energetic punk-pop with a gang of trumpets and saxophones and don’t go thinking ah, ska punk again, no no on! They got brass but they’re not down that ska road. Bit of a Blaggers ITA vibe actually, touch of King Prawn maybe, all very Northern and not to be messed with, bit of raw poppy Stiff Little Fingers/early Jam and solitude going against the grain. Raw infectious punk pop energy and speed, bit of backs against the wall Northern soul in there, this is good – right got them nailed then with all their unfashionable energy and drive. Hang on! What’s this? Have You Got A Knife is off on a completely different train, still very obviously the same band/gang and a riff that kicks off and the brass driving and you think right, until the rough gruff voice starts telling a tale of stress on a railway station in a kind of frantic spoken word John Cooper Clark in a bad rush to get in a fight with Detective Inspector Gene Hunt kind of way. I like this band, fine fine double A-sided single, proper Northern gang of punks

This is the second band I’ve reviewed recently that’s aimed for a resurgence of the post-hardcore tunefulness of 80s American bands like Husker Du and the Replacements, a welcome return in my opinion. The Minions do pretty well at it, with Six Chords having a catchy Bob Mould feel, throwing in a noisy horn bit at the end to keep things interesting. Have You Got a Knife has a harder edge which is surprising given the prominence of, I swear, a slide whistle on the verses. This type of thing would make for a nice soundtrack prior to going down the pub or something equally mindless and fun.
SINGLE OF THE WEEK - Manchestermusic.co.uk
This Bolton eight piece outfit may on the face of it, allude to the world of ska and punk - but here they emerged with the brutally rocking “Six Chords”. It's a brassy, heavy, skater friendly slice of punky pop and anthemic guitars. The Minions thrive on radio friendly soundbites that snatch swift references from Californian rock, somehow adding a little bit of Mexico there and a dollop of Lancashire folk there. The rather brilliant “Have You Got A Knife” is their version of “Parklife” set around northern, hoodie infested back streets - genius. Minions have all the hallmarks of a classic band in the making.

As you may or may not be aware SoundARC hold a charity gig every year at Club 85 in Hitchin in aid of the Garden House Hospice in Letchworth, and this year we are going to try something a little different from previous years.
This year we are going to take over the club and host 37 acts in one weekend putting full bands upstairs and acoustic acts downstairs in an event that we are calling ARCfest!
It all starts on Friday 4th December at 7pm and then continues on through Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th from 12pm-11pm
As well as raising money for the Garden House Hospice in Letchworth, ARCfest will showcase all the different genres of bands that we at SoundARC have come across over the last 4 and a half years. Over this weekend a lot of the acts that you will see don’t get a chance to play a great local venue like Club 85, So as well as hearing new music you will see all manors of genres and styles from acoustic - Metal - Indie - Rock - Punk - Electro - Ska - Funk - Hip Hop/Rap - Alternative - Rhythm & Blues - Reggae - Grunge and loads more that I cant remember!
Thanks for the add chaps. Metonia wish you well and hope all your ventures and adventures are good ones. Please feel free to come back to our space anytime and check out our tunes/vids, please leave comments and we might even see you at a gig sometime!... cheers. Step off the edge
