Wind. Funnels with wind in them. Rocks that don't move even when lava rushes toward them in anger. Layers of water.
In the spring of 2007, guitarist Rory Lindsay, bassist Tristan Samuk, and drummer Andrew McMullen met vocalist Liana Rose. Dubbing themselves Ministry of the Environment, they wrote a fresh batch of tunes and began playing monthly shows in Toronto venues. October 9, 2008 marked the release of their first disc, "An EP."
Blending elements from their previous bands (Showroom, Leviride) and their shared love of The Sea and Cake, Sonic Youth, The Smiths, and others, Ministry of the Environment create pleasingly ambitious and carefully crafted pop music.
Their second EP, "Your Name, Your Street, Your City," is out August 6, 2009.
That was a great set at The Hideout. A shimmering pop feel, weaving through an indie-rock spirit and sweet hooks. Accompanied by Liana's cooing vocals, this is music that's both beautiful and mature.
