Minor Groove is a jazz trio that was formed in the fall of 2007 by Chase Morrin (pianist and composer), David James (drummer), and Daniel Oldham (bassist). Together, we create and compose a variety of musical genres to include jazz standards, Latin, funk, fusion, classical, and rock.
Chase Morrin, ASCAP award winning jazz composer, is the pianist/keyboardist/composer for Minor Groove. Chase is 14 and has earned a number of awards for composition, piano, and best rhythm section with his concert and big jazz bands. Chase composes and conducts for musical theater and teaches private piano to elemenaty students. Chase enjoys all forms of jazz and classical music. You can read more about Chase at www.chasemorrin.com and find information on his big band at
www.thejazzensemble.com.
David James holds the drum throne and is the youngest of the trio at 13 years old. He has only recently come to San Diego from England. He is accomplished in a wide range of musical styles, and has won numerous awards for his drumming on both sides of the Atlantic. These include Outstanding Jazz Musician at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and Outstanding Soloist at the Stanford Jazz Workshop. He is studying jazz vibraphone and marimba as well. Currently David also plays drums for The San Diego Youth Symphony Stage Band, and Coast Christian Fellowship Worship Band.
Daniel Oldham is Minor Groove's bassist. He is 15 years old. He was fortunate to study with Victor Wooten in Nashville in the summer of 2007. He also plays with the San Diego School of Rock (SOR) and was noted by music critic George Varga of the San Diego Union Tribune as an SOR bassist “to keep an eye out for.” Daniel also arranges original bass lines and plays with San Diego 17-year old singer/songwriter, Lindy Crandall.
We enjoy inviting singers and horn players to practice and perfom with us. We also play for a variety of venues including corporate and private parties. Conact us if you would like to be a special guest or if you would like to book us for your next gig. Check out our website for most up-to-date information: www.minorgrooveband.com.
