| Bio | Wouldn’t it be great if MySpace had the cutting-edge futuristic technology to create paragraph spacing in these bios?... Anyhow, Minotauk Falls is a weekly Flash-animated situation comedy we’ve begun shopping around. Here’s the back-story. The tourist city of Minotauk Falls is located smack dab on the U.S./Canadian border, a hundred or so miles away from its arch rival city, Niagara Falls. Its claim to fame is that it’s North America’s first (and only) town of dual nationality. Yep, due to a land dispute too complicated to get into, the town is both Canadian and American, making it the source of a seemingly never-ending amount of cultural conflict.
Minotauk Falls has always had an inferiority complex with Niagara Falls, and the city’s mayor is hell-bent on putting it on the map as a world-class tourist area. Despite his best efforts, it doesn’t quite cut it as a vacation spot. There’s a rather anemic main strip that runs through the town (Celebrity Fax Museum, anyone?), and a mediocre casino / entertainment complex that caters to the modest amount of tourists who actually come visit.
At the heart of the show are the Shannon Brothers: grizzled Tommy and his not-so-bright younger brother Michael. They run a restaurant in the city of Minotauk Falls called The B.Y.O.… Essentially, it’s an eatery with no food. You bring in what you want to eat, and for a fee they’ll cook it for you and serve it to you at your table. If you want them to hold the mustard when they make you a sandwich, don’t bring the mustard. Anyhow, for reasons the brothers can’t comprehend, business seems to be struggling a bit. Go figure.
The B.Y.O. is populated by a small cast of regulars who make up the core of the show. There's Jamie, the faithful employee, and Derek, the always calm, uber-intelligent Native fellow. Then there’s Officer Maria Jankowski, the tough-talking cop relocated from Boston to serve and protect the citizens of Minotauk Falls.
Some more back-story… The pilot begins with a flashback to two years ago, when the gang throws a surprise 40th birthday party for Tommy. Unfortunately, being caught off guard, Tommy thinks the diner’s being burglarized and accidentally shoots Jamie in self-defense. Tommy goes away to prison for a couple of years, only to return in the pilot episode. Jamie – ever the sport – continues to hang out at the diner with his pals, only now as a ghost.
The Minotauk Falls series follows the Shannon brothers, Jamie, Derek & Officer Jankowski as they attempt to put up with each other in a quirky city that’s as Canadian as it is American. |
