   Tribute to Mint's Blurbs
About me:
Mint Burston, who died on November 17, 2007, was almost single-handedly responsible for turning the Joiners Arms from a back-street Southampton pub into one of the most important venues on the UK gig circuit, vital in the early careers of Radiohead, Oasis, Muse, Coldplay and almost any important band of the last thirty years. Mint’s unerring instincts, his tolerant approach, his unselfishness and his promoting skills are remembered and appreciated by all who have visited or played at the Joiners. Please use this space to share your memories and appreciation of the unassuming but truly great man.

TREES PLANTED IN MINT'S MEMORY

The Forest of Dennis have received £255 so far donated in Mint's memory. This means that they will be able to plant 255 saplings in the forest.

I'm sure Mint would have been very happy to know this!

So sad to hear about Mint. What would the 90s Southampton scene have been like if NBT had never happened? It doesn’t bear thinking about.

Everyone has people they bump into in all the most unexpected places and Mint was one of mine. Not just around Southampton - where he’d be handing out flyers, zipping about on his bike, and of course, at all the most tasteful gigs - but London, Reading…I’d half-expect to see him cycle past when I was abroad. It’s no great mystery really, since there was always music involved; we would be on our way to or from the same events, but still, in a world of 6 billion...and he would always smile and say hello, even though I am one of the least talkative of those 6 billion.

I’d been off the scene 3 years (nervous breakdown, very rock ‘n’ roll!) and when I finally emerged from my hole late last summer, I soon found myself wondering why Mint was not around…

For me, he was like the shopkeeper in Mr Benn – smiling, letting you through the magic door (okay, he was just inside the door, but the principle…), a knowing look in his eyes, ‘see where you end up today, Mr Benn…!’ And it usually was magic.

RIP Mint. Thanks for all the wonderful noise!

Thank you for all the good times, Mint, you always gave us top gigs, at a time when nobody knew us, you put us on the bill regardless, and were always so kind....We will miss you...! Rest in peace old friend.

Thanks Pat for having us all back to the Joiners on Thursady, Mints family and particulary his brother wanted to see where it all happened. Thanks to everyone who attended the service, I know that Mints family apprecicated your support and I know that many of us couldnt have gotten through it without the mutual support in the form of hugs and hankies. Ged, you were a star and no, no one could have done it better

I Loved the fact that at the wake it was 'business as usual' on the local band front; Roy and Kev planning to re-form the Green Egg, Roger and Jim planning a one-off (?) reformation of The First Men In Space to play the planned Mint Memorial gig. Joe insisting Beautiful Life headline and graciously allowing the Delays to support doing a 20 minute set max!
Lai-Yun planning her gigs for under18's venture -the young bloke from Mintsouth making plans to expand (the name is Music IN The South but also partly as tribute to Mint) .... brilliant - Mint still an inspiration for things to happen. He'd have loved it.

How Mint got to be mint;
Speaking to Mints family today at the Joiners I finally understood the mystery..

When at grammer school Mint and all his mates re-named themselves after Ken Dodds Diddymen - Mint was DiddyMint and the Mint bit stuck!

So nice to see so many of the usual suspects today, hopefully a lot more at some time.

Very sad to hear about this.
Mint was a very decent bloke, and one of the few promoters I've met who actually seemed to like music and musicians.
Thanks for letting us play at the Joiners during the late 80's and early 90's, and for all those fantastic gigs we came down to see.

AN INVITATION TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO GET TOGETHER AFTER THE FUNERAL AND HAVE A DRINK AND REMEMBER MINT AT HIS BELOVED JOINERS:
Pat has very kindly offered the use of the front bar at the Joiners after the funeral service on Thursday so that we can get together to remember Mint and maybe drink a glass of Bushmills for him!
For those who don't know The Joiners it is situated in St. Mary's Street, Southampton, SO14 1NS.
Thanks Pat, there couldn't be a more fitting venue.

PLANTING TREES IN MEMORY OF MINT

As many people already know, Mint had a great love of nature. He had a specific interest in the Forest of Dennis, a creation of the publisher-poet-environmentalist Felix Dennis. The forest is located in Warwickshire, a special place to Mint as it is where he grew up. It is planned for it to one day reach 30,000 acres and will be open to the public. The Forest of Dennis is a registered charity and all the trees are native broadleaf such as oak, ash and hazel.

As an alternative to flowers at the funeral it has been suggested that Mint would have been pleased to have trees planted in his name in the Forest of Dennis. If you would prefer to plant trees for Mint instead of sending flowers then you can send a cheque payable to 'The Forest of Dennis' and write 'Mint' on the back.

The cost is about £1 per sapling so between us we can plant many and a message will then be posted on this site in the New Year to let everyone know the exact number planted in Mint's memory.

The address to send cheques to is:

THE FOREST OF DENNIS
FELIX DENNIS' OFFICE
9-11 KINGLY STREET
LONDON
W1B 5PN

Registered Charity No 1097110

I had known Mint Burston for several years, but its only been in the last couple of years since his illness that we got to be real friends. Mint you were a mountain of a man in my eyes. I will always remember you for your never ending compassion for others, your enquiring mind and your search for Truth. You came into my life and touched my heart. You taught me so much. You were a one off. Totally unique. It was an honour to have been your friend. I am going to miss you.

During the last months of his life I had the privelege of sharing Mint's artwork with him. It is a wonderful and very ecclectic collection. I really enjoyed those evenings sitting round looking at his work, it told so many stories and revealed so much to me about Mint's many depths and I am so glad to have been there to share all of that with him.
Mint has left this collection with me saying that he would like the people close to him to be able to choose any pieces that they would like to have to keep to remember him by. Since his death I've realised that there were alot of people close to Mint that I don't know and who might well love to have such a personal momento. I will over the next few weeks sort out how to organise this, but wanted his friends to know that he had remembered them in this way.
Thought you might like to know that
he has left one piece specifically to be given to the Countess Mountbatten Hospice - named 'Bagism volume 2' and made from the offcuts from his colostomy bags when they were cut to size - which showed so well how Mint found humour and creativity in even the most dire of situations. I am having that framed so it can be presented to them.

Loved and missed, remembered always you were so brave and fought so hard for so long, I still cant believe it. We didnt get to cycle down the course of the river nor see Peche Merle but when I do I'll remember you should have been with me. Rest in peace now. Love Gilly XXXX

Nov 21 2007 12:49 PM

It's been said many times before, but I'll say it again - Mint was a genius of a promoter - so often one step ahead of the game, and totally modest about about this great talent of his. I've long thought of him as Southampton's own version of John Peel. For many years Mint enhanced the lives of thousands of gig-goers with the endless stream of awesome bands that he discovered and brought to the Joiners for us. I never got to know Mint as much as I'd have liked, for the Mint that I knew I liked very much. For the music scene (and not just Southampton's) Mint's passing is a great loss. I'll miss him.
Emma

Mint

You were so many things to me: a promoter, mentor, boss, musical inspiration and friend. Music in general and Southampton music especially is worse off for having lost you when you still had so very much more to give.

You will never be forgotten and will always occupy a special place in my heart!

Mint,

You taught me how important music can be in life. I've spent some of the best of times in your company. I'll dearly miss our Reading Festval trips
together.

Mint made some truly great music himself. I dearly treasure the track he wrote for our little boy Dylan's birth.

He touched everyone with his genuine honest nature. His bravery in the last year is an example to us all.

We will miss you dearly my friend.

Mint your brilliant ear for music is in no doubt but you will also be remembered for your talent and love of art, your love of nature, your knowledge of so many fascinating things and your genuine interest in your friends. We are all lucky to have shared so much with you.
Your courage and strength throughout your illness was truly humbling and inspiring. Missing you Mint. Lots of love Lizzie xxx

Nov 19 2007 1:08 PM

Mint opened my ears to so much music that otherwise would have passed me by, no-one else in Southampton put so much of himself into what he organised. Mint knew that some of his gigs weren't going to make money but that didn't matter to him- and that's what made the difference. He was so determined to battle on through his illness and enjoy whatever he was able to, a sterling example to us all. We'll miss you mate. Matt and Vicky x

It was a real honour to meet Mint last year and it is impossible to believe someone who had such passion and drive for the local music scene is gone. It is a huge loss for us all, but rest assured Mint was a legend even before he passed away and his name will live on. Louise, Hampshire Chronicle.

I didn't see you when you were first ill a couple of years ago, but I'm glad I saw you over the last weeks. To see your optimism, positivity and courage, despite the harshness of your illness, was a privilege. You said there were good days and bad days, but that even the bad days were half good. Confined to your bed, you spoke about books you were reading, DVDs you were watching, and you were obviously still getting a lot out of life even in your situation.

I'm sorry you didn't fulfil what you said was your last ambition - to outlive Margaret Thatcher!

The hospice people were brilliant and kind, and I hope that a benefit gig for them can be organised.
Mike

Nov 19 2007 2:09 AM

I didn't know Mint personally but he is my kind of bloke supporting real music in a scuzzy bar that I frequented in my student days in the seventies and latterly when I moved to Southampton. Didn't go to a great many gigs there but Robyn Hitchcock supported by Heather Nova was a cracker and the place was jammed.
Oliver has done a excellent job of recreating the enthusiasm of Mint and the ambience of the Joiners, a place for dangerous rock and roll and a good beer rather than shrink wrapped music piped out over clinical West Quay to hurry along the Marks and Sparks junketeers.
Next time I'm in a scuzzy bar I'll tip a toast to Mint for what he stood for.

Cheers Mint, sorry I didn't get around to phoning you, but you know me ... thanks for being a funny sort of mentor to me. It's only now that I appreciate what a good Editor you were back in the Due South/Sound Info days - never once did you re-edit, re-write or shorten my write ups. In the days before My Space it was you that gave bands, writers and photographers the space and freedom to do,say and play what they wanted. Thanks for that opportunity. And all those great gigs ...and the rubbish ones too!
