Renowned for her rich, spine tingling vocals and as a strident yet sensitive double bass player it is another busy year for musical chameleon Miranda Sykes. Although touring with Show of Hands in Germany and throughout the UK this autumn, Miranda remains involved in a number of other musical projects.
Since the tender age of nine, Miranda has been playing the double bass. Although classically trained, she has experimented with other genres, including rock and country music. Folk music eventually lured her back to her roots at the age of twenty, inspiring her to tour Europe and America with folk rock band ‘Pressgang’.
She continues to build a solo repertoire of contemporary and narrative songs, which recently have shown influences from her love of Jazz.
Miranda is increasingly in demand both as a double bassist and singer. She has worked with Robb Johnson, Firebrand, Steafan Hannigan, Leon Rosselson, Bill Jones, Roger Wilson, Alan Burke, Kirsty McGee, Phil Beer and Little Johnny England.
Miranda has committed to touring with Show of Hands throughout 2009.

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001
Where traditions are not so rare; Sea, country and works scent the air; A multitude of monuments, Planted tubs and patterned pavements.
The longish pedestrian malls; The remnants of defensive walls; Historic buildings are a gauge Of the respect for heritage.
Wheat, rape and pines in the fields; Estuaries guarded by shields; Long sandy beaches and wide scenes; Romantic-ruin go-betweens.
Rivers in parts licked by trees, Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries, And crossed by practical delights - Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.
Fine churches headed at Durham; Football kits ad infinitum; Kept castles - one for study; Masonry behind masonry.
And, with moulding-works out that way, It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?
Hope you are ok today and are having a great day whatever you are up to. I have had a really hectic day. Too much to do and too little time to do it. XXX

Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN
Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the gig at the Wulfrun hall in Wolverhampton. I was the photographer having a great time trying to negotiate the tiny pit space in front of the stage. Your voice was amazing! I got some great images that night too so thanks. You have a new fan!
