Miriama Young composes for voice, instruments and electronics, and her music moves freely between media. Much of her work playfully glides and elides distinctions of musical genre, exploring where lowbrow meets eyebrow, where experimental rock meets the classical avant-garde. Some projects involve interdisciplinary collaboration, and include works for radio, spoken poetry projects, and interactive electro-acoustic music for dance.
Miriama's instrumental works is programmed by ensembles in the United States, the UK, Europe, and New Zealand, including recent performances by So Percussion, New Millennium Ensemble, the Nash Ensemble, Stroma, the Yesaroun' Duo, Strike Percussion, Now Ensemble, and Anemone Dance Theater. Her radiophonic work has aired on Resonance FM London, Radio New Zealand, and NPR (USA).
Miriama grew up in Wellington, New Zealand, and studied music at Victoria University of Wellington. In 2000 she was awarded a Fulbright Award to pursue [post]graduate studies at New York University, then Princeton University, where she gained her Ph.D. in Music Composition (2007).
She currently resides in Scotland, UK, a Lecturer in Music at the University of Aberdeen. Miriama’s music is recorded on Strike’s album New Zealand Percussion Music, on the compilation of electronic works New Zealand Sonic Art 2000, and The Waiteata Collection of New Zealand Music. Her debut album, 'Speak Volumes' will be released imminently!
hey thanks, hopefully snapdragon goes along well, it's been fun putting together. We are performing it again on the percussionist's (Brian Claxton) recital in March and I'm going to keep trying to perform it on later dates. Thanks again
I'm really well. Enjoying being post-academia (for the moment, at least), concentrating on family and making music for myself again. Do let me know when your album's out.
