It may only be January but it looks like we already have a favourite of 2009 here at Music-News Unsigned. Liverpool-based band Misery Guts are fantastic. With gorgeous melodies, psychedelic undertones and beautiful lyrics this folksy, sixties inspired track is the perfect debut and is bound to get them noticed. Brilliant.

With a name like Misery Guts, you can't really fail, can you?
Great modern folk music this, complete with plinky-plonky mandolin sounds.
It’s got all the elements you require in the genre – drama, singability, funkiness, originality, humour, etc, etc, etc. One of the best records I’ve heard in ages.

Released on "black Monday", which this year falls on the 26th of January, Misery Guts' debut single 'Trying To Be The Sun' is an acoustic treat that harks back to the days of Simon and Garfunkel.
It's all based on a death-row novel and is even accompanied by a stylised cartoon video to help tell the story, but essentially it's a bit of quality "pop with a dark side" that slips a bit of Turin Brakes alongside that Paul Simon acoustic style.
'Hiding At The Front' and 'Let Me On My Way' are spicy b-sides that show us a bit more of what Misery Guts can do. It's a strong debut that should make Liverpool proud. Reiewed by Steve @ The Mag.
For some strange reason, the fantastically named Liverpudlian outfit, Misery Guts, have decided to commemorate the most miserable day of the year (the last Monday in January, fact fans) by releasing their debut single 'Trying To Be The Sun'. Which could have opened a whole world of pain for them.
But, know what? It's an absolutely fabulous song, all 1968 shimmery Jefferson Airplane. The acoustic psychedelia vibe continues on B-side 'Hiding At The Front', albeit it in moodier style before C-side (eh?) 'Let Me On My Way' strips their acoustic sound right back to basics.
A real treat, I can't recommend this highly enough. It's one of those downloady thingys, out on iTunes on the 26th January. Although, if you're lucky enough to catch one of their live shows, you should be able to get a proper CD copy.

With influences like Nick Drake and James Taylor these boys have really captured something special. With Beautiful Melodies and lyrics comparable to Mr. J Lennon you will be in love with their songs by the end of there set.
