Melchor Isaac Agúndez was born on July 14, 1983. His parents gave him the nickname "Mishack" as a combination of his first and middle name. Mishack comes from a family of musicians, both of his grandparents played wind instruments such as the saxophone and clarinet. "One of the reasons why I decided to pick up the saxophone was in honor of my grandparents" Mishack answers when he was asked why did he decided to play the sax instead of the guitar like his father.
Life wasn't quite easy at first for Mishack. Born with sinus and with an opening in his heart, a wind instrument would have been the last thing Mishack's parents would have thought that he was going to play in a future. One day before he was going to have surgery from his nose, Mishack, at the age of 4, prays to God to heal him from his terrible condition of sinus. At the day of the surgery, the surgeon said there was nothing to do to Mishack, he was completely clean. God also scarred the opening that Mishack had in his heart.
Music wasn't easy for Mishack as well. Mishack's family comes from a Christian background, thus Mishack has attended church throughout his life. He usually clapped his hands off beat while the congregation was worshiping. Tried to play guitar, but he decided to give up. Tried to play percussion, however, because of his lack of keeping the beat, "it sounded absurd", he says.
Mishack's ancestry has a rich musical background, his parents, Melchor and Noemi, decided to enroll him in a marching band program at the age of 14. That same year, in 1997, he decides to pick up the alto saxophone. "I never took private lessons from the beginning. My Band Director would say, follow the instructions from the book, and you'll be fine." He replies after being asked under what type of method did he learn. Mishack's gift of music is so unique. " I asked God to give me the gift of Music, and that I was going to dedicated to him in everything I do". As it always happens in the beginning, Mishack struggles in the first months to play the sax, and his Band Director moves him to Bari Sax, since the Band needed more bass and music was much easy to play. Since Mishack use to live in a trailer park, his mother use to send him to practice for 2 hours inside a van. By the end of the school year, Mishack knew all of his major, minor, pentatonic and blue scales. Mishack by then, also discovers that he has the gift of "perfect pitch". "Ask me for the name of a note, and I'll sing it to you, play a chord, I'll tell you which one it is and also figure out the notes that you are playing." In less than 18 months, Mishack was already playing for many local bands and Gospel groups as well.
At the age of 21, Mishack decides to make music for a living. Mishack understood Music Theory better after 7 years of playing. Mishack also took private lessons on Music Theory with Music Composer, Alfredo Aranda. Took courses on Theory, Solfege, Counter Point, Orchestration and Instrumentation. Mishack also spends time listening to Jazz Standards and different saxophonists like Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Paquito D'Rivera, Justo Almario, Ed Calle, Joe Henderson, and many others. Although, Mishack says that his all time favorites are Michael Brecker and Eric Marienthal. At the beginning of the year 2007, Mishack says is time to let myself be known, share, and minister people through my Music. On September 1st, 2007, in a Yellowjackets concert, Mishack met one his all time saxophone idols, Eric Marienthal. "Eric Marienthal is such a great teacher and a humble person. There's so many things I have to learn from him. I'm so blessed to have a world class saxophone player like Eric Marienthal, as my teacher".
Currently, Mishack teaches Music Theory in Elementary Schools and gives private lessons to saxophonist of all ages. There's so many projects Mishack is involved with. Also, Mishack is working on his first Album, composing and arranging different themes. Keep updated with this young saxophone player. He has a lot to share, of what God has given to him.
