Influences
soooo many: from J.S. Bach to Debussy, Ravel, Skriabin...
all the wonderful Jazz singers like Ella, Sarah, Billy, Betty Carter, Carmen Mc Rae, up to today's singers, like Deborah Brown, Dianne Reeves, Rachelle Ferrell, Nnenna Freelon, JD Walter, Kurt Elling...
Gospel of Mahalia Jackson,
Pop like Stevie Wonder, Lionel Ritchie, Sting, Joni Mitchell,
not to forget my German roots, Marlene Dietrich, Ilse Werner, Hildegart Knef: storytellers and actresses rather than singers...
Originally from Mainz, Germany, I've been living in Moscow for nine years now, where I work as a singer and songwriter and teach improvisation and vocal technique. I'm honoured to play with Moscow jazz greats like Sergej Manoukian, Jakov Okun, Aleksandr Mashin, Anton Revnyuk, Vladimir Nesterenko, Genja Borez..., and perform with various formations in Moscow jazz clubs and in venues all over Russia, Eastern Europe and Germany.
My first album "With a bit of your love" was released in May 2004 at Rodenstein Records, my second album "Early Train" in July 2006. "Quadratur des Kreises" (quadration of the circle), a German Jazz CD with biblical issues in May 2008. My newest CD "Christmas Jazz - Vom Leuchten der Sterne" (rearranged christmals Carols from 16th to 19th century), which I recorded with Vladimir Nesterenko, Anton Revnyuk and David Tkebutshava, has just been released.
I also plan to record jazz standards I arranged last summer during a two month stay in New York and since.
In summer 2006 I got to know Lionel Haas, a very talented composer and pianist from Berlin. After playing several concerts in Berlin, Azerbajdjan and Georgia we decided to continue our work as a trio named "MLJ -siMpLy Jazz" (voc. Misha Steinhauer, pno Lionel Haas, bass Jonathan Robinson). See my top friends for further info on the musicians mentioned in this text.
In the beginning of 2007 I came to know Matthias Claus. Since then we played such interesting venues like "Weinheimer Jazztage" ,"Braunschweig Classix" and others. It is a pleasure to work with such interesting and innovative musicians...
I started my musical life with singing before I could walk (at least that's what my grandma always said) and because we had a wonderful old piano, my parents payed me piano lessons, when I was 9 (whereas I wanted to sing). I had my first band with 16 and wrote my first own songs and always dreamed of studying music, but mayored in economic education at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz first -you've got to work for a living - and took singing lessons. I had several musical projects and worked with styles such as rock, funk, jazz rock, R&B, fusion and gospel. In 1999, my husband was transferred to Russia, and the whole family with three daughters moved to Moscow. I began to study full-time at the College for Jazz and Contemporary Music "Consort" (meanwhile renamed to "Gershwin-College"), majoring in Singing and Composing. Among my teachers were Inga Yannik (Singing), Yuri Tshugunov (Composing), Michail Okun and Irina Tomaeva (Improvisation). I took part in festivals and contests and won several awards, for example in the national Yessenin Contest for Young Composers, took master classes with Deborah Brown, J.D. Walter and others, and had private lessons with J.D. Walter and Miles Griffith. In May 2004 I passed with distinction. Almost at the same time my debut album "With a bit of your love" was released by Rodenstein Records. It consists of 13 originals (music and vocals: Misha, lyrics: Marion Otto, piano: Pavel Panfilov, bass: Pavel Korshagin, drums: Vitali Igonin, saxophone: Gotshar Temirdyanov).
Early in 2005, I met Yakov Okun and his MosGorTrio (bass: Anton Rewnyuk, drums: Aleksandr Mashin). It was the beginning of a fruitful collaboration: we've been giving concerts and in November 2005 recorded my second CD "Early Train". The songs are once again my own, also the lyrics (except for "Early Train" and "Last Date With the City" Marion Otto). A further fruit was "Quadratur des Kreises" 2008, music and lyrics by me.
Life in Moscow is quick thinking, fast rhythm, improvisation and always new even in standard situations... a kind of Modern Jazz, it seems.
Misha, I hope this comment reaches you, your family and friends in great health and spirits.
I wanted to take time to personally Thank You for your valuable friendship and never ending support of me and my musical endeavors. Mere words can't truly express the depth of gratitude felt in my heart however, they're all I have so THANK YOU !
I'd like to also wish you and your family Peaceful, Joyous and Loving times as the Holidays approach. May YOU be blessed with ALL that you desire for yourself and for your loved ones.
I continue to look forward to another year of us growing together in our friendship and our endeavors.......that is, if these kids of mine high ticket items on their wish list doesn't bankrupt me first :-)

Dear Misha, hope you are ok and singing out from the deepest deep.... Thanks for your friend ship and kind words!!! Happy holidays and a bright 2010 to you !!!!!!
Thank you so much Misha! It means The Peace of Christ be with You and is one of my first attempts at writing full pieces instead of just riffs for improvising. It was inpired by the Lutheran services at church in Tartu, Estonia, where I spent a couple months earlier this year. The church has these wonderful bells that are calming and mysterious and it made a great impression on me! Never underestimate the drummer :) Many thanks!
Hello Misha, I hope all is well with you :) As a long standing friend here, and one who encouraged me to post my material when i was new, I would like you to hear my new piece "Kristuse Rahu..." on the profile, and i would welcome your comments :) Take care and be assured i am following your music with joy and pleasure :)
