’Xisteria’ is my latest piano work, recorded 2007.11.21 in Kista Church in Stockholm. I composed it during the summer-autumn 2007, mostly in Köln/Germany.
The title ’Xisteria’ is my self-invented word, a combination of “Hysteria”, “Existence”, “History” “Ex-Hysteria”, “Ex-History”… well, play with it and you’ll surely find more combinations of secret meanings.
I tried to play this piece partly very gently, sorrowful, fragile, to get lost in my worried and chaotic thoughts about life, destiny and existence. But in other moments, I let myself being nervous, aggressive, self-destructive, careless and hysterical, foolishly rushing and jumping in unexploited and maybe dangerous (musical) situations.
’Makadam’ and ’345 knots’, are recorded February 2007 in Bologna/Italy.
’Makadam’ was performed for the first time during the international World Music Festival 2006 in Eskilstuna/ Sweden.
’Makadam’ is 32.40 minutes long piece, spiced by some etno music harmonies and scales from the Balkans. ’Makadam’ is a painful trip through the memories from my past, youth, and my former homeland.
The piece consists of 6 parts:
- Makadam I - leitmotif & intro - Behind seven mountains - a romantic piece, like the soundtrack for some French movie where in the middle of it J. S. Bach meets the 7/8 measures of southern Serbia and Macedonia - The Shore of Changing Names - partly inspired by the ’sevdah’ music from Bosnia, lots of music themes, improvisation and again some 7/8 measure and rhythmic changes - Rakija and Pine-Cones - like waltzing with Edvard Munch’s ’Scream’ - Summer of 1982 - a gentle and nostalgic mantra with the Balkan spices - Makadam II - leitmotif reprise, and the end of the trip
’345 knots’ is a 14.20 minutes long piece.
It consist of 5 parts:
- Masts I - opens like a soundtrack for a storm, with heavy winds, rain and waves pounding the ship that leads us into the story... - Luna Mare - a gentle piece of jazzy improvisations: the sea, the moon, the night before the big trip... - 345 knots - the constant changing of 3/4, 4/4 and 5/4 measures becomes a sailors’ dance in some strange foreign overseas land - Masts II - the bass-heavy foundation and the chord progression again, some rough sea and heavy weather... - The Horizon - gentle ending, the victory of.. the sea? or the sailors?
