    Don Wilson's Interests
MusicMississippi Son has a completely original blues-rock soundtrack composed and performed by victims of Katrina. I would like to extend my special thanks to The Edge's Music Rising and The Grammy's MusiCares. We recorded the soundtrack with equipment purchased with grants from these two organizations. Rock on.
HeroesWe have a whole section in Mississippi Son about the faith based organizations and others (including first responders) who have helped the victims of Katrina. These are my heroes. I'd like to thank each one personally. Hopefully, our "Time of the Dove" section will be seen by many of them and let them know how thankful we all are for the good people who have helped. The film also features never-before-seen storm footage shot by people as they were actually going through the hurricane. Talk about heroic.

I live in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles but I'm a Southern boy. I've been in the film and TV business since beginning at WLOX-TV in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1976. I knew when I walked into the control room of the TV station and saw all the knobs and switches and monitors that this was it. I had been a professional musician until then when school didn't get in the way... I was lured to LA by the dream of bigger and better things. I've been fortunate to have worked with some of the biggest stars and traveled the world doing sports and music concerts, but I now dream of the South. Especially my home area of the Mississippi coast. My wife Leslie and I have often talked of a second home on the Gulf Coast between her home of Pensacola and the MS coast. We love the South, its people, and its beauty. When I went to get my mother out after Katrina, I knew things would never be the same. I took photos, showed my wife and family after I got back and told the story of the photos. We all cried. Leslie talked to me for a few months about doing this film. She really made this thing happen. She wrote and produced the film and went to Wal-Mart at dawn each morning to get food and drink to keep the crew alive in the sweltering heat. The shoot was hard. We crawled among debris and were immersed in devastation and sadness each day. But we met incredible people who had lost everything and their spirits and determination lifted us to keep going beyond exhaustion. We also had great crew-mates. Our friend and brother Kim Hoyt suspended rebuilding his life to help make this film happen. Besides being my favorite guitar player ever, he's one helluva grip. AJ Ayers, a New Orleans boy fo'sho' worked hard and made us all laugh. Dave Lacy was tireless in his work and Leslie was there to keep it all together. I know I can be tough to work with because I want it all. But we all wanted the same thing and that's to tell this story and keep the people of the Gulf Coast in the national focus. So this "about me" thing is really about all of the people around me that made this all happen. Kim has been invaluable. Brother Bill has as well and our "Princess Lori" Gordon is the best PR person on the planet. But I and we all owe a great bow to my wife Leslie. Oh she's a feisty one for sure, but she's the best and I love her.
Who I'd like to meet:
I'd like to meet the insurance executives who refuse to pay the people of the Mississippi coast after Hurricane Katrina. Unbelievable. I'd like to tell them a thing or ten. And I have a few choice words for FEMA and the other government agencies who have also failed the Katrina victims. These people lost everything in the storm and there is still very little help. If my documentary accomplishes anything, I hope it convinces people to continue to help those still suffering on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Have a beautiful season of rebirth and love, Don. The Coast was cheerful amidst the wreckage last week. Lights are shining and a sense of hope is felt. Kisses to your beautiful 'Momma' and family!

Heya, Don...MANY thanks for the CD. Gave it a listen on Saturday w/o headphones...wide open...all magnificent 20 tracks.

This is a piece of Mississippi musical history! Can't wait for Joe to get back from CA for a listen. :)

Anyone who has ever experienced a hurricane, or cyclone, should hear the sounds of the storm on some of these tracks. It is incredible. It gave me shivers up the spine to think that Joe was right in the middle of Katrina and this is what he heard. It must have been deafening and horrifying! You did a fantastic job with the capture!

As for the tunes...you have a cool diversity of local artists all doing their beautiful thing!
Most of all...I hear
authentic Mississippi blues...moaning, soothing, rockin.
LOVE IT!!!!!

Very sad to hear about Lori's situation, but glad to hear Kim is still managing...what a frontiersman! lol! My mom grew up in Brookhaven and my dad in Monticello...but, never heard anyone call it Pinetucky! haha! but...I can guess why!

Will get back to ya later! Yes...
next weekend...headphones on...
volume up...I am not as picky about my hearing as you guys are! lol!

Well, it's a sad anniversary today. Three years ago, Katrina destroyed the Louisiana and Mississippi Gulf Coast. Now Gustav is bearing down on the very same region. Lord have mercy.
