It seems that Miss Lori, Lori Holton Nash, was always destined for great things. She started on her path to stardom belting out Helen Reddy’s “I am Woman Hear Me Roar” at the age of 4 in her parents Milwaukee living room, and has been roaring and singing ever since.
Lori Holton Nash is a native of Wisconsin and began her Theatrical career at the age of 9 with The Children’s Theatre of Madison. Averaging 4 shows a year throughout her elementary years she continued to both study and perform in Milwaukee when her family made the move to the new city. At the age of 12 she became the youngest scholarship student for classical voice at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. Just two years later she was named Miss Wisconsin National Teen-Ager and went on to finish in the top 10 nationally.
While still in high school, Lori directed a Creative Arts Program for the Sherman Park Boys and Girls Club and earned a place in the 1986 Summer Cast at Melody Top Theatre on the Mainstage and with M & W Children’s theatre. Later that same year she split her day between High School and The Skylight Comic Opera Ltd. performing in their professional production of Ain’t Misbehavin’.
Lori earned several scholarships and pursued her undergraduate studies at Carnegie Mellon University, The Professional Theatre Training Program at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and The Boston Conservatory. In 1991 she graduated with honors from The Boston Conservatory, earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a Musical Theatre Concentration.
After working in both New York and Los Angeles Lori moved to Chicago and immediately began working with Music Theatre Workshop. She spent three years touring Violence and Drug Prevention Musicals in the Chicago Public Schools as a performer and a group discussion leader. Music Theatre Workshop gave Lori the opportunity to help students process the feelings they experienced when faced with the provocative musicals. Lori continued her study emotions working alongside her Mother, Psychotherapist Carol Holton, leading Empowerment Workshops for Women at Risk in Wisconsin.
While working with Music Theatre Workshop and her Mother Lori also continued to pursue performance opportunities. She worked at many Chicago area theatres and appeared in notable roles including Tammi Terrell in BET’s All I Need To Get By, Glory in Keith Glovers’ directorial debut of Thunder Knocking On The Door at Northlight, Dussie Mae, opposite Harry Lennix and Felicia Fields, in The Goodman’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, as well as Gloria in The Ovations Concert of One Touch Of Venus opposite Liz Callaway and directed by Gary Griffin. Lori also understudied Marilyn McCoo as Julie in Hal Prince’s Showboat, and was the Female Understudy for Barry Manilow’s Could It Be Magic. In 2005 Lori completed a two-year run with Menopause The Musical as both the Principal Understudy for all four parts and as the Dance Captain.
Lori continues to perform doing commercial voice-overs and can be heard singing on both American Girls Revue Soundtracks and in the role of Lilah Leach on the demo of the new Musical Julian Po by Andrew Barrett and Ira Antelis. She also created her role of Lilah Leach in person in a staged reading of Julian Po when it was honored with a place in The Chicago ASCAP Workshop.
Ten years ago, when Lori became a mother she started spending a lot of time playing imaginary games with the neighborhood kids. She tapped into her passion for working with children and celebrating the arts. In doing so, she realized that there was yet another way for her to share her talents with the world, this time off-stage.
In 2002 Lori became “Miss Lori” and began teaching jazz, tap, creative movement, and acting classes at a Chicago Dance Center. Additionally, during the 2003-04 school year, Miss Lori had the pleasure of working as an Artist in Residence for Pershing Elementary. She worked with the Elementary School’s Arts teacher helping students create curriculum-based assemblies. That same year brought the introduction of her budding C.A.M.P.U.S. programs, including the TOGETHER Series and the Taking The Stage Program.
In 2004 Miss Lori took on the position of Program Director for a Chicago Dance Center using her years of theatrical experience to produce their recitals for the 2004-05 class year. Following the success of these productions Miss Lori decided it was time to branch out on her own, anxious to bring to fruition her ideas for Arts programming beyond dance. Miss Lori spent that summer pouring all of her energy and creative focus into creating her own Resident Arts Program. As a result in August of 2005 The C.A.M.P.U.S. Inc., now known as Miss Lori's CAMPUS, was officially introduced to the public.
Miss Lori recognizes the importance of the Arts in life as a tool to discover one’s own “voice”. She believes strongly that the Arts help people unlock the wealth of creativity that they have inside of them, allowing them to discover and cultivate the tools they need to express themselves confidently to the World. Miss Lori hopes her programs will help children in particular find ways to tap into that voice, while simultaneous indulging and nurturing their natural sense of “wonder”. Miss Lori’s mission for her Company is proclaimed in its’ name, Celebrating Artistry Musicality Physicality United Successfully!
Miss Lori has a three new titles to add to her resume-that of “PBS KIDS Host” and “Recording Artist” and Children's Ambassador. In 2006 Miss Lori was named the first ever live host of PBS KIDS new preschool destination, and in early 2007 Miss Lori released her debut CD “Miss Lori's CAMPUS, Music ‘n Movement TOGETHER!”. This year Miss Lori was named the first Ambassador for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's Healthy Smiles Healthy Children Campaign. Don’t worry she isn’t stopping there. Miss Lori will add playwright to her list of credits later this year with the debut of her stage show “Miss Lori’s CAMPUS Garden; Growing”, a companion piece to her debut CD. As well as her first children's book series "Little Miss Lori, Adventures in 5 Year Old Living". Now children across the country will benefit from Miss Lori’s boundless energy, passion and commitment to the development of young minds and bodies.
Miss Lori is currently hard at work on her 2nd album, the first single of which has already been released. AWESOME 8! You can find the AWESOME 8! music video on her youtube channel today!
