Paula May is the envy of many Houston, TX-based musicians. At age 19 and with no music education, she has burst onto the music scene with her captivating brand of experimental piano-pop.

May got her start as the keyboardist/vocalist for indie band Adlai. When the group separated a year later, she continued solo as an electronic act but has recently rebuilt her sound into something more intimate and minimal.

Her piano melodies have a haunting quality that combine the atmosphere of Angelo Badalamenti with the quirkiness of Mikhaela Yvonne Maricich (The Blow). Her vocal work is reminiscent of classic singers such as Billie Holiday and Madeleine Peyroux as well as taking influence from modern indie/alternative singers such as Denali’s Maura Davis and Antony of Antony & the Johnsons.

Though her music is relatively simple and minimal, her lyrics are very deep and complex as she writes lyrics as a form of catharsis. “I have never written a song that wasn't about a bad time or something negative in my life,” she explains. “I believe that we learn the most through bad experiences and no one should ever be ashamed of them.”

Her powerful voice is a surprise to all who see her perform considering her short stature and very shy demeanor. “I was not expecting that out of her at all,” admits new fan Marie Flora. “She looked so scared, then she wrecked [it]. She sounded great.”

Paula May is currently planning an album release party for her second album, Red Rum, in May of '09.
