Greetings! My name is Jonathea D. Tso from Cove, Ariz. I am of the Red House Clan, born for the Bitterwater Clan. My maternal grandfather is of the Red Running into the Water Clan and my paternal grandfather is of the Tobacco Red Running into the Water Clan. My parents are Irene John Tso of Cove, Ariz., and J.D. Russelle Tso of Black Mesa, Ariz. My maternal grandparents are Mae N. and Lee N. John of Cove, Ariz. And my paternal grandparents are the late Francis and Fred Russelle of Black Mesa, Ariz. I have five younger sisters - Kolandi, Koltey, Jonette, JoDawna, and Jonnea Tso. Being a good role model for my sisters and spending time with my maternal grandmother is very important to me.
I am the reigning Miss Navajo Nation 2007-08. In 2004, I graduated from Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. I received my bachelor’s degree in both Native American studies and environmental studies.
I graduated from Aztec High School in 2000 with honors. Being a good student and having a positive attitude has always been my priority. My grandmother’s advice and guidance has been the foundation of my well-being.
As Miss Navajo Nation, I will be a strong advocate for our youth and elderly. For our youth, I encourage balance between our Diné way of life and the Western world.
Awareness and understanding of our Diné culture and language can be a strong source of self identity. Today’s youth have many obstacles to over come but knowing we have our people (through K’e) behind us gives us encouragement towards positive life goals in both Diné way of life and the Western world.
I believe it is a unique experience seeing the full circle of the elderly and the young taking care of each other. On my part, my grandmother raised me and now I take care of her. In my experience, it’s the small things that count like making coffee for her, covering her at night, or even reminding her that our whole family loves her.
She has taught me so much about who I am as a person through our Diné cultural teachings and through the trials of caring for another human being to the full extent. These are the things our elderly need - to be reminded that they have our respect, love, understanding, and admiration.
To my Diné people, I hope to implement some of the Diné teachings to motivate today’s youth and communities. A positive attitude and hard work is what I have to offer. Thank you for your support and encouragement. May you all walk in beauty.
