Interests

  • General

Jazz, Photography, Comedy, Baseball, Writing, Film, Theatre, Politics and Political Discourse, Art, Urban Planning, Human Rights, History, Dining out, Cooking, Entertaining, Sleeping in, Wine and Kitties.
  • Music

Many, many artists excite me on a daily basis. Among them:

Oscar Peterson, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Gil Evans, Terence Blanchard, Vince Guaraldi, Jimmy Smith, Horace Silver, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr., Blossom Dearie, Bob Dorough, Bobby Short, Dave Frishberg, Duke Ellington, Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Maurice Brown Dexter Gordon, Wes Montgomery, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, The Clayton/Scott Group, Joni Mitchell, The English Beat, The Style Council, Sqeeze, The Clash, Tom Waits. Also all manner of Broadway composers from George and Ira Gershwin to Frank Loesser and Stephen Sondheim.

  • Movies

I grew up on Classic Hollywood (thanks to my older sisters and Elwy Yost!) and I still love the films from that period. Spike Lee and Woody Allen speak to me in a way that no other filmmakers ever have. My photography is often inspired by Spike Lee and his frequent collaborator Ernst Dickerson as well as Woody Allen and Frank Capra.

    My favourites include:

Malcolm X, The Apartment, Annie Hall, Manhattan, To Kill a Mockingbird, Some Like It Hot, Duck Soup, Animal Crackers, Round Midnight, Die Hard, The Quiet Man, That Thing You Do!, Dog Day Afternoon, The Searchers, All About Eve, Holiday Inn, It's a Wonderful Life, American Splendor, The Odd Couple, The Producers, All The President's Men, The Godfather 2, Do The Right Thing.

  • Television

    Oh, I love my TV.

The West Wing, Homicide: Life on the Street, The Wire, Studio 60, 30 Rock, 24, The Steve Allen Show, Sports Night, Law and Order, Law and Order SVU, Chapelle's Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Da Ali G Show, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, South Park, Charlie Rose, Anderson Cooper 360, Freaks and Geeks, Live with Regis and Kelly (don't you judge me, don't you DARE judge me), America's Next Top Model (okaaaay...judge me!)

  • Books

I'm not reading nearly as many books as I want to / should on account of all the time I spend reading online (The New York Times, CNN, Wonkette, Jezebel and lots of great blogs) and all the periodicals I'm addicted to like The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Downbeat, CODA and The Atlantic. That said, I'm always looking for suggestions to add to the pile of books I'm hoping to read soon. These are some favourites:

Aunts Aren't Gentlemen by P.G. Wodehouse, Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris, Harpo Speaks by Harpo Marx, Act I by Moss Hart, Benchley Beside Himself by Robert Benchley, Bird Lives by Ross Russell, Franny and Zooey by JD Salinger, Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz, All Too Human by George Stephanapolulous, Jennifer Weiner - the novels and the blog, Anything by Dorothy Parker, the lovely Doris Kearns Goodwin, Playwrights Anna Deavere Smith and George C. Wolfe, The Joy of Cooking, etc...

  • Heroes

People. Humans are great. Specifically, people that make me think, make me laugh and those that fight for social justice. That may sound inane, but it's true. Norman Granz, Steve Allen, Anna Deavere Smith, Tina Fey, Maureen Dowd, Joe Torre, Malcolm X and, well...you actually. No kidding.

About me:

I'm what they call a "multi-hyphenate" in the arts and entertainment industry, based in Toronto.

I spend a lot of time supporting my favourite jazz musicians as a freelance publicist. You can find out more at the MTN Media Relations website. I also keep busy updating my award winning blog where you can get my take on life in Toronto and see my photographs, some of which have recently received an exhibition called New Orleans: Where do we go from here?

I am a contributor to CODA magazine. You can also find my writing on the premiere jazz site on the web, All About Jazz.

In 2008, I was nominated for Photographer of the Year at the National Jazz Awards (Canada).

Who I'd like to meet:

Jazz artists, journalists and fans. Fellow photographers. Anyone who is passionate and creative and wants to share their work!
