Jimmy Five's Interests
|
| General | Invention, art, philosophy, postmodernism, theology, politics, music, engineering. Jerry-rigging stuff when nobody thinks it's possible. Building random furniture out of scrap wood. Making objets d'art out of found trash. Seeing the clutter in my room but knowing where everything is. Learning how things work. Figuring out a way to make sense of the world... ...y'know, the usual. | | Music | Really eclectic... right now my interests seem to be floating in the range of a fusion between bluegrass, funk, Indian, Latin, rock, soul, and electronica. Such a fusion would bring about the end of the world. Really the only genres I don't listen to are new country (alt-country and old country are a-ok) and Christian (I listen to a few artists who are Christian, but marketed "Christian" music makes me want to hurl.) | | Movies | I discovered about a year ago that I shouldn't really see too many movies in the theater, because I can't sit through a full two or three hours unless it's really amazing, something I've really looked forward to, or I'm just in the right mood. But here's an attempt to talk about movies.
The Big Lebowski is pure brilliance from start to finish.
I think Airplane is one of the funniest movies ever made.
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and Dude, Where's My Car? are the products of either extreme stupidity, or incredible genius. I'm inclined to think the latter. Yeah, I've got an advanced degree, and I like those movies. What's it to you?
The Lord of the Rings films, obviously, are incredible. Obviously. They also make me want to visit New Zealand, if for no other reasons than to see the giant Argonath statues by that lake. Isn't it incredible that they just happened to find those there?
Finally, if you haven't yet seen Dr. Strangelove, there's a Dr. Strangelove-shaped hole in your soul. I advise filling it. | | Television | No, thank you. Really, 95% of the TV I watch is actually on DVD, because I don't want commercials in my life, and it's easier anyway. The first four seasons of West Wing were the best four seasons of television ever made. I also have a deep and passionate love for Arrested Development. COME ON! | | Books | Life without books is not life. Seriously. I'd list the books I like, but there are too many. The Politics of Jesus by John Howard Yoder, Strength to Love by Martin Luther King, Jr., God Has A Dream by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Traveling Mercies by Anne Lamott are on my "everyone should read" list. If a person reads those four books and takes in everything the authors have to say, I can't imagine him or her not coming out a better person on the other side. | | Heroes | Jesus Christ, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Martin Luther King Jr, Gandhi, Rosa Parks, Mother Teresa, Bono... people who aren't afraid to live out their ideals, people who restore my faith when I just can't believe anymore that one person really can change the world...
...man, that sounds cheesy... |

Jimmy Five's Blurbs |
About me:
I'm just your average (rhetoric Ph.D. student / heretical Seminary graduate / postmodern / progressive / inventor / artist / drummer / freak). I invent things. I teach impressionable undergrads for a living. I am a lifelong student - not because I'm too insecure to enter the real world, but because there's so much to learn and The Man won't let me become a wunderkind star professor without at least one Ph.D. I'm a far-flung member of a church that goes to Burning Man and worships in a drum circle. I live in a house in Maryland with my cat.
I have impeccable grammar.

Who I'd like to meet:
Jimmy Carter, because there's nothing I don't admire about that man. Serious about his faith and serious about his conscience. A class act all the way.Desmond Tutu, the heir to the legacy of great peacemakers like Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. I saw him speak once, and it was electrifying.
