About me:
The Central California Art Association and Mistlin Gallery
1015 J Street, Modesto, CA 95354
Gallery Hours:
Tuesday-Friday, 11:30AM - 6:00PM
Saturday, 12:00PM - 4:00PM
For over 50 years, the Central California Art Association has been providing Stanislaus County with quality experiences and opportunities for creative expression. Our 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization maintains an actively growing membership of over 400 artists and supporters.
The CCAA has evolved greatly since its beginning as the “art league” in 1941. Originally, the group of Modesto artists offered volunteering services to World War II veterans at the Hammond General Hospital, taught “Painting for Fun” classes at Modesto High School, and put on a series of small one-day shows in various locations.
By 1950, compelling public support for the League’s efforts initiated the organization of an official association whose mission was to stimulate interest in the creative arts. The group’s first exhibit, featuring a total of eighteen paintings, was held at the old Winter Garden Skating Rink in conjunction with the Garden Club Flower showcase.
The CCAA took up residence in the auditorium of the McHenry Library, only to relocate soon after to the Community Center on Morris Avenue, back to the library, then to McHenry Village, and other various locations on 13th, 12th, and 14th Streets in downtown Modesto. For thirty years, the CCAL made a modest home in the basement of the McHenry Museum until, in 2004, circumstances beyond our control forced the organization to find a new address.
As luck would have it, 10th Street Place, a large government office with commercial space, was being built at a prime location in the heart of the Modesto. This new space has given us the ability to reach more people and a more diverse demographic, gallery space to hold elegant and professional shows, and a large classroom for our children’s’ art classes (run in collaboration with Modesto Parks and Recreation) and workshops taught by local, national, and international artists. And in this location, we have the ability to interact and coordinate efforts with other local arts and entertainment venues. Every third Thursday, we are open from 5 to 9 in the evening for the Art Walk; all are welcome to come share with us an evening of light music, wine, hors d’oerves, and fine art.
The CCAA’s new “Mistlin Gallery” is open to all artists of all ages, skill levels, media, and genres. Prospectuses are available to anyone interested in being our “featured artist”. We offer several widely recognized events each year, including the SPRING SHOW, EXPOSURE PHOTO SHOW, YOUNG MASTERS ART SHOW, and our anticipated ART AND WINE FESTIVAL.
