"The Mistress is rich, gorgeous and immortal. Oh, and smart, too; very, VERY smart.
You never knew the Chateau as I once knew it, between the wars. Then it was something: the new Lloyd Wright affair on the Upper East side, all glass and marble and steel. Now the glass was razor-sharp and broken, the marble granite, the steel stained red from more than just the rust. What was once the epitome of elegance had become an edifice of evil.
I had come to town tonight wide eyed and legless, drunk in the back of an old checkered taxi as beaten up as I was, cursing myself for playing poker with Jeff Wells, a man so vain he signs his name in the snow with a curlicue, but who plays poker with a face like Chris Walken on industrial strength valium. By the time I had tipped the cabbie I had bus fare left, always assuming the fares hadn’t gone up since ‘53.
Chateau Malevolent East. As I looked at the gates, a shiver ran up my spine that was only stopped by the hair that was standing up on my neck. In the darkness of the courtyard twin yellow lights that long ago might have passed for eyes, floated seven feet above the ground, and the gates opened with a groan, splitting the motto written upon them in two: Abandon Hope, all ye who enter here. That goes twice for you, Crosby.
I walked through the gates, and took out my notebook and pencil with shaking hands. Whether what happened later that night is true or false, I’ll let you be the judge. Everyone knows the normal rules don’t apply to the Mistress. Me, I just want to forget about the whole damn thing. Yeah right, buddy: that’ll be the day."
