GeneralHow You Can Help:

Create a miracle for a backyard dog! Befriend owners and offer to walk dogs who spend their lives circling the same patch of dirt. Toys, treats, straw in the winter, love and ear scratches can make a lonely world a little less lonely. Click here for more information.

Work to BAN dog chaining in your community! More than 80 jurisdictions across the U.S have passed laws to address this cruel practice. Yours could be next – Click here to ban chaining in your community.

Sponsor a doghouse! Dogs like me are desperate for a little warmth. The holidays are a perfect time to help “backyard dogs” with the gift of a sturdy, elevated doghouse stuffed with straw for extra coziness. Click here to sponsor a doghouse.

About me:

My name is Misty and I am chained 24-7 in my “owner’s” backyard. As you can see from my photo above, I was born with a birth defect—my legs are severely bowed—sometimes it’s uncomfortable for me to stand or walk (although I don’t walk much since I am chained around the clock and have not much room to move). Despite my condition, my “owners” have bred me to sell my puppies. My last litter was rough – I had 13 puppies; some of them died, others were sold, and a couple of them are now chained close to me, in no better shape than I am. I really wish I were spayed. It is no life for me or my babies to be chained up like this. We are forced to eat, sleep, and go to the bathroom all in the same spot. It’s no life for man’s best friend. I know I deserve better but I’m one of so many dogs chained up like old forgotten bicycles, and it seems so hopeless that things will ever change. Just in my own backyard there are 2 other dogs chained like me, in addition to my babies! Five of us.

I’m just sad and tired all the time. Maybe I’m depressed – I constantly feel broken, empty and hungry. My body is weathered and sore. Sometimes I think that I am losing my mind. I pace in circles and don’t even realize I am doing it! One time I was got so tangled in my chain that it cut both my back legs to the bone. It hurt so bad – I cried and cried, but no one untangled me for two days. My “owners” neglect to even give me food and water on a regular basis. When I had my last litter, I got so thin – I really didn’t think I was going to make it. All I had to nurse my puppies on was mud, dirt, and the barren wooden floor of the nice doghouse someone gave to my owners so could keep dry at least.

Yeah, believe it or not, things used to be even worse! One day I was feeling extremely sad. My little “home”—a plastic barrel—had become cold and frozen—so cold that my ears would freeze to its sides when I tried to sleep. Trying to find a spot in the sun as I always do (it’s so much nicer in the sun, but sometimes I can’t reach the sunny spots in the yard, my chain is too short), I was startled by the kind hands of a passerby who stopped to help me. She scooped me into her warm arms and gave me water. Water that wasn’t frozen! She applied ointment to the wounds on my legs and gave me treats and toys. She gave me a delicious meal. She filled my barrel with straw to keep me warm. Best of all, she kissed me and told me I was a good girl and that she would give me a house and come back to visit me. A little while later she returned with a big sturdy wooden dog house to replace my barrel. This house is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Now I am not so cold in winter and much cooler in the summertime. I would much rather be inside snuggling someone on a sofa, spending time with a loving family where I can have belly rubs, walks, and treats, but for now this will have to do. The nice lady who gave me my house comes to see me every few weeks, and that’s something so nice to look forward to. I am a little happier and much more hopeful. Please help other dogs who are like me. We need all the kindness we can get.
