I grew up working for my dad at Harb Tire Recapping Service at 6 Conrad Street in Lexington. Originally the business my dad started in 1949 was Harb Garage. I was 5 years old and wrote my name in the wet concrete. When I was 8 years old, I went to work at the garage. I washed oil pans cleaned carburators and other car parts with gas. I did all the dirty work. I had my own coveralls and dressed just like a mechanic. I also usely smelt like one too!!

My dad raced Motorcycles in the late 40's and early 50's. He would build the Harley WR engines at the garage. I can still remember the sound of those engines. In the mid 50's the business turned more toward tires. I recapped tires, whitewalled tires and changed tires and everything else that there was to do in a recapping shop.

In 1969 at age 25 I left my dad's business and went to work for Firestone Tire as the Retail Sales Manager in the Charlotte district. I worked for Firestone for 6 months and they were building a new store in Lexington. They wanted me to stay with them an be the manager of the Lexington store. I was use to to doing business a lot different than Firestone so I decided to leave the company. I went back to work for my dad and stayed there until I turned 40 in 1983. At age 40 I knew that the days of recapping tires were about over, I knew the future would be in new tires and I would have to look outside my dads tire shop. He wasn't interested in changing the store to new tires so in 1983 I left Harb Tire Recapping an opened my own business, Mitch Harb's Discount Tire Sales at 1458 Old US Hwy 52 & 8 North in Lexington NC.

I finished high school in 1962. I always loved music and always provided music for all the parties among my friends. I will always remember going to the beach and fast dancing at the Pad. Fast dancing, that's what it was called before it became the Shag. Sometime we would go the the Play House Grill at Cresent Beach and dance on the patio. You could always find a house party to go to at OD. We all new what the B29 was. How many of you beach music lovers & shaggers no what the B29 was. Every body wanted the B29. We would get a permit from the city and have a bond fire at the dead end at Cherrygrove. You could even walk down the street with a beer in your hand. Oh!! the good old days before all the laws that stopped a lot of the fun at the Beach. I remember the Old Beach Club on Hwy 17. One dollar to get in and a milkshake cup full of beer was 25 cent. All the National acts played there weekly. One dollar to see National acts & 25 cent beer, what a deal.

In 1976 I started an annual party and named it "Night Of The Turkey" which is a registered trade mark. The party, always held on Thanksgiving Eve became something that people from miles around looked forward to every year. Depending on the location it was always standing room only with crowds of 500 to a 1000 people lined up to attend. The Fantastic Shakers, The Entertainers, The Kays, Breeze Band an several other bands thru the years have provided the music. Mitch Harb's Mobile DJ Show as well as Chad Sain, Johnny Barkley and several other DJ's have been guest DJ. 2008 will mark the 33rd year of "Night Of The Turkey". Details of this years party will be made public in October 2008. Thanks for all the support from all you "TURKEY HEADS" from "THE BIG TURKEY".
