It seems like the age-old mantra, "If you seek, you shall find," holds especially true for rising artist Mitsue. The daughter of a Japanese mother and Black father, born in 1985 in Queens, NY, her journey to the studio and stage has been one riddled with all manner of coincidence and serendipity.

As a child, Mitsue describes being surrounded by art. Her mother, an artist herself, exposed her young daughter to many modes of expression, most pointedly painting and music. Mitsue grew up listening to music that made her mother move: Prince, Janet Jackson, and Gladys Knight. To be now making music that moves people is more than just a career for Mitsue: it is, indeed, an homage to her first and biggest fan, her mother.

After taking vocal lessons in high school and under the guidance of a very supportive and encouraging Renaissance mom, Mitsue decided to go to college at SUNY-Stony Brook. But her innate need to perform, kept nagging at her.

She completed three years of college and decided to go where the wind led her. In her case, it was into friends’ basement recordings studio where she was recording songs she had been writing since she was a teenager. During this time, she was in commercial modeling and trying to break into TV when she met Tarik Baker, who would become her beacon, friend, big brother and mentor.

Tarik and Mitsue put together a pilot for a VH-1 series that slipped through the cracks, the two remained friends and Tarik introduced her to platinum producer Boola who would change her fate entirely.

Boola, trusting his long-time friend Tarik’s judgment, decided to humor young Mitsue. But the minute Mitsue opened her mouth, the deal was done. Boola and Mitsue began recording her current singles, "Guard Up" and "Strut" immediately, and are working on a forthcoming album.

"I’ve never felt so clarified in my whole life, so clear in my mind about what I’m supposed to be doing," says Mitsue.

As for her music, when asked what current artist she is most like, she promptly replies, "I’m a Mitsue." One can hear inflections of artists as varied as Prince, Cyndi Lauper,
Kid Rock, Missing Persons, Run DMC, Kings of Leon and Vanity 6 in her work. Clearly not one to be boxed into a category, Mitsue maintains that her music is for "everyone."

Ultimately, Mitsue would describe her music and sound as "Hip Rock," which is infused genres from everything to anything. Mitsue explains her style is more rock as to Boola’s is more hip hop, and together their styles relate to everyone. Mitsue’s music reflects on her versatile style while empowering and metaphorically relating to general topics, but in a females perspective. As a rising artist, Mitsue’s foremost goal is to introduce herself and the new sound of "Hip Rock" to the industry.
