Hong T. Chin (1922-2009)
My grandfather was born in Kay-Lung Village Hoi-Ping, Guang Dong, China in 1922. He first came to the U.S. in December of 1939 when the Japanese started bombing small Chinese towns. He was drafted into the US Army when he was 21 years old, October 1943. He was not yet a U.S. citizen, and he applied for citizenship when he was drafted. He went through basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama.
He was assigned to the 29th Division as infantry and his commander was General Gerhardt. During the Second World War, the 29th Infantry Division played a decisive role yet again when it successfully assaulted Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944, as part of the great Allied amphibious invasion of German-occupied France. The D-Day landings were a turning point in World War II and the beginning of the end for Hitler's Nazi Germany. If you watch Saving Private Ryan, you can see the 29th Division patch on many of the soldier’s arms.
On D-Day, my grandfather was in Bristol, ready to be shipped out. He arrived at Omaha Beach about four days after D-Day. He was the first group of replacements for the 29th Division. When he stepped out of the landing craft, “I saw debris spread over the beach of Omaha. My mind was frozen, and I didn’t know what to think,” he said. They had the airplanes controlling the airspace, and they had more fire power such as tanks, artillery, mortars, and manpower. His unit pushed rapidly to the west of Normandy with little opposition. After they had weeded out all the enemies, they reversed their direction and headed east.
On July 18, 1944, they met stiff resistance at the outskirts of St. Lô. “The air force and artillery had flattened the place pretty well. Most of the buildings and houses were destroyed” he said. My grandfather was injured by shrapnel from a German 88mm artillery cannon at St. Lô. He was sent back to the hospital in England after his injury. After being transferred from England back to Camp Blanding, Florida, he received a Purple Heart, European Campaign Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was stationed at Camp Blanding and later discharged when the Japanese surrendered. He served in the U.S. Army just over two years. His division played key roles in the Normandy breakout, codenamed "Operation Cobra," the liberation of Brittany and its critical port of Brest, the Rhineland campaign in Holland and Germany, and the final defeat of the German Army east of the Rhine River.
My grandfather went to be with the Lord on March 22, 2009. He gave me his WWII uniform, every time I look at it or even put it on, I am reminded of the service that he has done for his country and his family, and of how proud I am of him.
