Media Coverage of the Legislative Session The Star Tribune published an article on May 21, 2008, about the conclusion of the legislative session regarding attempts to change the state's sex education statute. MOAPPP's Executive Director highlights MOAPPP's concern that the state's leadership does not seem to recognize the important role that responsible sex education can play in improving health outcomes, especially for teen pregnancy, HIV and STI prevention. While we want to share these concerns publicly, MOAPPP recognizes and respects the governor's work on behalf of the state, and wants to clarify that it is not its role to advocate for or against any elected official, political party or campaign for public office. Minnesota Adolescent Sexual Health Report This report is a summary of the sexual health of Minnesota’s adolescents and uses the most current data available. The report provides information .. sexual health indicators, such as pregnancy and birth statistics, STI/HIV, health disparities, low birth weight and prenatal care, sexual activity and other risk and protective factors in a brief and easy-to-read format. A copy of this report (pdf) is available on our website. Public Policy Update During the last week of the legislative session, Representative Neva Walker and Senator Sandy Pappas made a final effort to update the state's HIV/STI prevention statute to ensure that Minnesota public schools would stress the importance healhty relationships, communications skills and individual responsiblity while providing Minnesota students with medically accurate and age-appropriate information about preventing pregnancy, HIV and STIs. The House passed this bill, but the Senate did not. Please join us in thanking the legislators who worked to advance this bill, and the Responsible Family Life and Education bill earlier in the session. Thanks, too, to all of you who spoke out on behalf of what we know works to equip young people with the knowledge and skills they need to grow into healthy adults. It's more important than ever to talk publically about how insufficient public policies negatively impact Minnesota teens. Training and Education Calendar MOAPPP's Training and Education Calendar includes the upcoming opportunities offered by MOAPPP, solely or in partnership with other organizations, from June through December 2008. Some programs are offered in multiple locations. Detailed program information and registration materials will be available on the MOAPPP website six weeks prior to each event.
May is Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month It's not too late to start planning how your organization can promote May as National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month (NTPPM). Observed each May by states and communities throughout the country, NTPPM seeks to involve communities in promoting and supporting effective teen pregnancy prevention initiatives. Advocates for Youth has a comprehensive National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month (NTPPM) Planning Guidebook,(PDF) that provides strategic tips and examples to help local communities plan and implement activities. Get more information on National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month events at MOAPPP's NTPPM page.,br>
