Life has not been crystal stairs for the artist known as M.O. Born and raised in the city known for civil unrest in the 90’s and which still continues today, St Petersburg, Florida, comes the blocks soul, the hoods voice, the inner cities mode of operation, it’s M.O.
Raised as the middle of three in a single parent household, M.O. escaped his environment of drugs and alcohol by turning to the pen and pad, as many urban poets did before him. Writing and music provided him an outlet to express his life, and struggles.
As M.O. grew the temptations of street, and all of its prizes grabbed him and would not let go. He found himself exposure to the reality of money, drugs, and women. The streets have a way of making you grow up quickly and teaching you a lot of lessons” says M.O., “The streets are unforgiving, unkind and loves no one.” This he learned first hand when his best friend and cousin was convict of a variety of drug and drug trafficking charges. This was a sobering experience for M.O., which led him away from the block and to recording booth.
Once in the studio it was quickly evident that he was blessed with the gift of speech and unique storytelling ability. M.O. lyrical style can be described as a blend of Etheridge Knight meets John Singleton. He paints vivid pictures with words and delivers his rhymes with a hustlers flow. His lyrical ability is how M.O. or Murda One got his name in the streets. He was known for killing beats with his block boy swagger, and spitting real game over any track he graced. “I was rhyming over an instrumental track and the fellas were like man you just murda that one, you be murda one man, and the name just stuck says “M.O.
What makes M.O. different is that he gives the real reality of the game and the block life, raw, real and uncut. “There is no retirement from the block, from the game, the block and game retires you” states M.O. “ The reality is that like so many I saw my options limited coming from my situation.” Everyone was bettering their situation or so it seemed.” But the reality is balling for a couple years’ means nothing when your best years find you behind bars” says M.O. “ I rhyme about the real hustle, the struggle of the have-nots. “
Somewhat like Langston Hughes, M.O. is a man with a pen and pad that articulates the struggles, the hopes, the aspiration of all with little striving to get more, to get the promise of America. “Who is M.O.? He is an entertainer, for thoses that cannot enjoy entertainment, a reporter for those who are not reported on, a poet, for the world to hear and experience the modern day haiku, quatrain, monody. Music and lyrics are his mode of operation (M.O.)
