Back in 1989 in Kuala Terengganu,
Modar was first incarnation with the lineup of Lani (Bass/Vocals), Tok Ari (Lead
Guitar), Bujor (Guitar) and Nusi (Drums). During that time, there were no gigs
in town, only pop stuffs were buzzing around, the jamming studio was the closest
to a concert. So, most of the guys and their fans cramped themselves into the
small room in order to listen to their stuff.
Around December 1990, Modar lost
their original guitarist, Bujor and they acquired a new member, Mang (we call him
Lan nowadays) which eventually became the main instigator of Modar’s future
activities. Man was from a band called Bota & Orion in Kuala Terengganu and when
he became a member of Modar, he handled the vocals duties. From that day, Modar
has started playing death metal taking Death as their main influence.
Around April 1991, Tok Ari & Lani
decided to do something else and left Modar. Man & Nusi tried out Imi (Bass) and
Zombie (Drums), unfortunately they did not work out good. Later they found Bujal
(Drums) and Nusi switched his position to bass. At this moment, they changed
their band’s name to Demori & recorded a demo tape titled “Victims of the Rule”
which consists of 4 songs. This demo never made available to the public and
later was accidentally destroyed be Man. Then, the band begun to find their own
identity & sound and started to play their own interpretation of Doom.
In August 1991, Tok Ari rejoined
the band on lead guitar and the band reverted to their previous band name, Modar.
This lineup got their first performance at the town’s bus station & able to
record a demo called “Inferior Symphony” with 4 songs included. Man opened his
own studio called “Neutral Music Studio” and practically the band sleep, eat and
jam at the studio every night. They even jam with the lights out except a couple
of candles to catch the atmosphere.
Around September 1991, Tok Ari
left the band again and was replaced by Joe (Bass) and Nusi moved back to
playing rhythm & vocals. In the early 1992, the band went to KL and recorded a
proper demo which consist 10 songs at Hellions Studio. When the band returned to
their hometown, he decided not to sell to demo because the recording doesn’t
represent the sound they were aiming for.
In April 1992, the band went back
to KL and recorded their first album “Inferior Symphony” under FGM Records, the
parent company to Sonic Asylum and Modar was the first ever band recorded a Doom
Metal concept album in this region.
A few years has passed, the band
has been dismantled due to each member’s personal reason. In 2006, Lan (Mang) who is a
guitar teacher in a leading guitar shop around Taman Tun Dr. Ismail area decided
to reform Modar back for a return. Unfortunately, most of the band members are
busy with their personal lives. Lan decided to use the students of the guitar
shop as Modar’s new band members.
Lan
decided to take Ariff (Guitars), Afiq (Bass) and Gabrielle (Drums) as the new
breed of Modar’s lineup. After a few jamming sessions, Gabrielle sadly had to
leave the band due to her studies and in the early of 2007, Lan took Azman as the
replacement of Modar’s drummer. Unfortunately, after a few gigs around KL, Azman had to leave the band due to personal reasons. Lan quickly found a replacement from one of his students named Rashid. This is the new breed of Modar!
