Modernboys Moderngirls (MBMG) are either punk rockers who play soul
music or soul musicians who play punk rock. It’s this dazzling combination
of sound, songwriting and swagger - influenced by Elvis Costello & The
Attractions, Otis Redding, Bruce Springsteen and the New
York Dolls - that’s got people all across the country singing their praises.
Led by songwriter, vocalist & guitarist Akira Alemany, MBMG pack depth
and excitement into their jumpy, pulsing rhythms that are the backbone
to Alemany’s punchy, emotional songs that you’ll know [the words to]
before they finish” says the Ottawa Xpress.
MBMG first gained buzz in the summer of 2008 when they were invited to
perform at North By Northeast (NXNE) festival and Edgefest all before
even releasing an album. With growing attention, MBMG released an
early cut of their debut album, a 10 song disc, to excellent reviews across
Canada and strong airplay on campus radio stations, reaching 8 on the
CBCRadio3 charts as well as garnering a CBCRadio3 Bucky Award
nomination.
Now, after noteworthy appearances at Halifax Pop Explosion and
Canadian Music Week, MBMG is getting ready to release their completed
debut album, I Might As Well Break It (IMAWBI). The album, mixed by Ryan
Mills (Born Ruffians, The Most Serene Republic), features 3 new songs and
has also been remixed and re-mastered to prepare the record for an
international release.
IMAWBI’s 10 songs relish in the unmistakable MBMG garage soul sound – A
driving rhythm section, slashing guitars, and Alemany’s whiskey drenched
vocals. The album is an exposed live wire, that mimics the energy of the
band’s live set, burning through 60s soul and garage, ‘50s pop gems and
70s punk-funk influenced songs. “The album is meant to never let up,
never give you a chance to catch your breath. I wanted to make a
record about people and relationships falling apart not brick by brick but
all at once”, says Alemany about his intentions for the recording and
writing of IMAWBI.
Taking their name from a moniker given to Japanese youth from the
1920s, MBMG, are ready to connect with a growing audience, tour
extensively behind IMAWBI, and continue earning their reputation as one
of the most exciting Canadian bands of 2009.

That was a great set at The Silver Dollar. A prime example of an energy-drenched performance, straight-up rock, infused with elements of mid-90's Britpop and the brash post-punk swagger of The Jam. These guys know how to crank it up with undiminished class and attitude.
That was a great set at Sneaky Dee's. True curators of Toronto-bred rock and roll, this power trio delivers a healthy dose of exuberant anthems bristing with crackling energy. Unleashing guitar-driven riffs and propulsive rhythms, MBMG succeeds in a supercharged set with unbridled spunk and a genuine sense of honesty. The CD release was a success.
