MODERN EARL // Anhören und hingehen !
Schon mal darüber nachgedacht, auf den Biker Day des Deutsch-Amerikanischen Volksfests in Dahlem zu gehen? Vermutlich eher nicht. Vermutlich dürfte auch bei geschätzten 99% der Leserschaft, sollte es zu einem solchen Nachdenken kommen, das Resultat des Gedankengangs zwischen „Nö, eher nicht so“, „Vielleicht in einem anderen Leben“ und „Warum gleich wieder?“ oszillieren. Warum also gleich wieder? Weil es sich lohnen könnte – und zwar, wider erwarten, musikalisch gesehen.
Musikalisch gesehen? Der Biker Day?! Sind da nicht mit Sicherheit nur Country-Musiker in Cowboystiefeln auf den Bühnen zu sehen, die von der großen Freiheit und Weite des Mittleren Westens singen? Doch! Genau! Und gerade das ist es, was zumindest im Fall der dort auftretenden Band „Modern Earl“ ordentlich interessant werden könnte.
Die vier Mitglieder der Band, die sich groß „Love, Peace and Chicken Grease“ auf die Fahnen schreibt, kommen aus wilden und aufregenden Ecken der Welt, wie New York, Tennessee und Leipzig, haben sich aber in Berlin häuslich niedergelassen, was Grund genug ist, ihnen an dieser Stelle ein wenig Aufmerksamkeit zukommen zu lassen.
Denn ein Konzert von „Modern Earl“ ist eine wohltuende Erinnerung daran, wie viel Spaß es machen kann, sich Live-Musik zu Gemüte zu führen, die sich selbst nicht immer zu hundert Prozent ernst nimmt.
Mit Cowboyhüten und oben bereits erwähnten –stiefeln, Halstüchern und Lederwesten, Banjo, Pedal Steel Guitar, Mundharmonika machen sie Songs über Waffen, tote Lieben, Alkohol und ewige Freundschaft, und ab und zu streuen sie Coverversionen vom Typ „Sweet Home Alabama“ ein, oder eine Country-Up-Tempo-Version von „Swing Low, Sweet Chariot“. All das hat ebensoviel Ironie wie Herzblut, wird dargereicht von brillanten Musikern, und wer vom Land kommt, fühlt sich an die besten Momente seiner Dorfjugend erinnert, wenn die größeren Jungs mit den Motorrädern ihren Kassettenrekorder auf die Straße gestellt und Bier verschenkt haben. Schon damals hat man eigentlich geahnt, dass es außerhalb dieses Rock’n’Roll-Idylls noch andere Dinge geben muss, aber man hatte trotzdem Spaß. Und genau diesen Spaß kann man auch hier wieder haben, wenn der Gitarrist seine Gitarre auf den Rücken dreht und dort weiterspielt, die Musiker meterhoch über die Bühne hüpfen, und der Sänger mit einer Stimme, die nach viel viel Whisky klingt, die endlosen Weiten der Prärie heraufbeschwört. Das alles ist so schön pathetisch und setzt einem gleichzeitig Feuer unter die Füße, sodass man weder aus dem Lachen, noch aus dem Tanzen herauskommt. Und auch wenn man sich das höchstwahrscheinlich sehr gute neue Album „Devil’s Playhouse“ am Ende doch nicht kaufen will, hat man auf jeden Fall das Gefühl, dass man einen Abend erlebt hat, der sich auf angenehme und erstaunliche Weise von dem abhebt, was man sonst so macht, sieht und hört.

Finally an artist who goes straight for the subject matter and does not waste time with subtle imagery and musical gimmicks. Modern Earl tells the story of everyman all the while forcing your feet to tap and your mouth to smile. In an age of such hi tech manipulation of perception, sound, and ideas, Modern Earl brings back the basics of hard drivin, story filled, beer stained tunes that once were the fabric of the American unconsciousness. Their first album "Hunker Down" takes the listener on a journey of musical opinions from the backroads and swamplands of a vast continenet that are often overlooked. The political disdain ballad "Mess With Texas" goes right for the jugular of the state of American political power while the hard drivin' title track and southern funk diddy "Hunker Down" describes the story of the working mans dilemma in a fake economy. "Hot Coals and Cold Beer" offers an alternative idea of the higher power based around the smoke from a grill while the tasty eatin' theme is represented with a good old fashioned spoken recipe for southern fried chicken. Their latest effort "Devil's Playhouse" pushes the agenda forward. Adding new members to the lineup, Ethan Schaffner on guitar, Ben Hunt on Bass and Markus Christ on Drums, the band have found their sound. Their new record is composed mostly original songs with the addition of 2 traditional s as well as a screaching cover version of Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" The lyrical content of the new songs deal with subject matter from near death experiences to rehab to life on the road. With over 120 shows under their belt in the last 18 months as well as a full tour schedule for 2009 these boys show no sign of letting up. Modern Earl is the brainchild of Colorado native singer songwriter Chris Hudson. Hailing from a jazz background he relocated to Paris, France from N.Y.C. in 2000 seeking a calmer and better quality of life. As the world suddenly started to drastically change he realized he had alot to comment on yet found himself restricted to do so in the jazz arena. Having grown up in a musical and politically active family he was exposed to everything from the Bill Monroe to Bach to The Sex Pistols, to Miles Davis etc... The most natural platform for commentary seemed to fall somewhere in between all of these with a heavy flavor of good timin' country. Voila! The concept was born Modern is for those who like like their music lightly fried with a whole lotta spice!
