| About Modern Giant |
Modern Giant are a four-piece Australian band whose unique combination of shining guitar pop and evocative spoken word storytelling has been winning over audiences since their formation two years ago.
Based in Sydney, Modern Giant's debut album, 'Satellite Nights' (produced by Simon Holmes) has been released on Popboomerang Records, with Popboomerang's head honcho Scott Thurling describing the band as "one of the most exciting local bands I've heard in years".
Drawing inspiration from the long tradition of Sydney guitar pop bands, plus elements from acts as diverse as the Go-Betweens, Patti Smith and Midnight Oil, Modern Giant do a fine line in loud guitars, but with an ear firmly cocked towards crisp pop melody and a strong element of spoken word.
Modern Giant in part emerged from the band Half Miler, which had earlier morphed from Disneyfist, one of the shining lights of Sydney music in the early to mid-90s. After a stack of high-profile gigs, including the Big Day Out, the band broke up in 1995.
Half Miler gigged around Australia for a year then relocated to London in 1998, earning enthusiastic reviews and scoring strong gigs. They returned to Sydney in late 1999, played several more shows and then released an album titled 'Pretty Cold But It's Nice When The Sun Comes Out'. This was warmly received but, in hindsight, put a neat full-stop on the lifespan of the band.
And so, enter 2003, and enter the Modern Giant, the members drawn together by a mutual love of melodic guitar music and a desire to create a distinct vision, one which not only captured their pop desires, but also one which allowed scope for the telling of narrative stories and the expression of affecting emotion.
In 2004, after a succession of gigs, increasingly showcasing the band's intriguing live visual show, Modern Giant released their debut EP, 'A Different Ring In Your Ears', produced by legendary ex-Hummingbirds front-man Simon Holmes. This EP received critical acclaim and the band's subsequent first two radio singles both gained healthy airplay.
And so to the thrilling debut album 'Satellite Nights' this was also produced by Holmes and it's a record that finds the band truly hitting its stride, brimming as it is with a lovely collection of new songs about love, loss, long nights and even longer drives.
