The lights go up, silhouettes on stage. The volume level goes through the roof; not just with the crowd but with hot white noise. That familiar sound of an amp clicking on, a cymbal being knocked, a lead being plugged in. Most distinct of all, I hear breath on a microphone.
Four clicks of a drumstick and I'm hit with a wall of sound. Bass throbs from the speakers like fire, shaking the already not-so-steady floor I'm standing on. I hear guitar wailing and a kick drum that hurts my chest with every beat. Then I hear a voice and know... the Gods are here.
Three songs in, I'm screaming and dancing like a wildman. The singer's dancing with me; he's singing about a dead French author I'm not familiar with. Then again, that's not the point. He catches my eye and sings a little bit louder. There, in a moment, is what this band is about.
By the end of the set my ears are ringing. It lasts all night. I'm physically drained, but too excited to care. I feel like a marathon runner, who's crossed the finish line, only to find he can't stop running.
To see Modern Gods live cannot be described in the small space here. It is to live and breathe pure energy. A band who want you to know they're on stage. They want you to go through it with them; the sweat,
the drama and, most of all, the music.
