Classical and Jazz are my first love. I used to be scared of monsters in the closet, so I always went to sleep with the local NPR station on. I learned so much about music from there, and listened almost exclusively to it until I was 13.
Ok, picture this. Summer of 2000. I was 13 years old and I wanted to learn "what all of the other kids were listening to." At first it was out of necessity because I had just become president of the local chapter of a youth service fraternity, and I needed to know what to play for a dance. I turned on 97X, and my tastes blossomed from there.
Nowadays, my tastes are much more diverse. I'll listen to almost anything (Country, Hip-Hop, and R&B are the exceptions), but my favorite genres are 80's new wave, alternative rock, and artistic electronic music. I listen to some out there experimental stuff, too. Some of the bands that have been in my CD player recently include Radiohead, Depeche Mode, Saves the Day, Godspeed you Black Emperor!, and System of a Down.
My girlfriend at the time took me to the System of a Down Concert in Orlando for their North American Tour 2005. We were in the pit, right on the rail, 10 feet directly in front of Daron! We were so close, that we could see the beads of sweat forming on Serj and Daron's foreheads! It was absolutely amazing! I wouldn't trade in that experience for anything!
"Be without fear in the face of your enemies,
Be brave and upright that God may love thee,
Speak the truth -- always -- even if it leads to your death,
Safeguard the helpless, and do no wrong.
That is your oath,
*smack*
and that is so you'll remember it."
"For surely we shall pay for using this most powerful instrument of communication to insulate the citizenry from the hard and demanding realities which must be faced if we are to survive. I mean the word "survive" literally. If there were to be a competition in indifference, or perhaps in insulation from reality, then Nero and his fiddle, Chamberlain and his umbrella, could not find a place on an early afternoon sustaining show. If Hollywood were to run out of Indians, the program schedules would be mangled beyond all recognition. Then some courageous soul with a small budget might be able to do a documentary telling what, in fact, we have done -- and are still doing -- to the Indians in this country. But that would be unpleasant. And we must at all costs shield the sensitive citizens from anything that is unpleasant."
"I'd like to share a revelation that I've had, during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area, and you multiply, and multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet, you are a plague, and we are the cure."
Just a small sampling of some of my favorite books...
I'd also like to make particular mention of the works of Edgar Allen Poe, specifically "The Masque of the Red Death" and "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar." I'm also getting into books on self-improvement with a good story, such as "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho and "The Way of the Peaceful Warrior" by Dan Millman. These are two really great books!

You are invited to join us for Vampire: The Requiem in Orlando
What we do is not easily defined. However, we gather together, to collectively tell a story, through each of us portraying a character of our own creation. Imagine if a soap opera or movie had no script, and all of the actors made their own characters. The characters are created according to specific guidelines, and all fit within a specific modern setting with hints of the supernatural. One person, the Storyteller, is like a combination of a Director, and portrays all the 'extras' that the player's characters encounter. There is also a set of game mechanics, that can be used to determine success or failure on tasks taken by the characters.
The setting is current day, with supernatural themes. Humanity is largely ignorant of the creatures that stalk the night, as a policy of secrecy, known as the Masquerade, is strictly enforced. Vampires, werewolves, ghosts, wizards, and other various creatures remain hidden in the darkness.
The characters we portray are vampires, whom are all enmeshed in a political body that covers the entirety of Orange and Osceola Counties. Byzantine political maneuvers that would rival Machiavelli are abound, as are social aspects which might be reminiscent in various soap operas.
Even though we portray vampires, we don't actually drink blood, nor do we actually believe that we are vampires. Most of us are normal people, with jobs, going to school, and some of us happen to have children. We look forward to our gatherings, as a form of escapism, that we can put aside the stresses from a 9 to 5 job, forget about the mortgage, and portray a character that has their own set of problems and personality quirks, for a few hours at a time.
You are invited to join us, to portray a character of your own creation, and get involved. We look forward to seeing you.
Our next gathering is Friday, June 19th, contact us for further details.
