About me:

Modern Skate & Surf was founded in 1979 in Royal Oak, Michigan. It has since expanded to three cities, with retail stores in Lansing, Grand Rapids and Royal Oak, along with the addition of skate parks in Grand Rapids and Royal Oak. When the store opened, it specialized in roller skates and ice skates. It soon expanded to include in-line skates (and was one of the first thirty stores in the world to carry Rollerblade), snowboarding, wakeboarding, and skateboarding equipment.

Modern Skate & Surf stays active in the Michigan community by participating in and hosting many charity events. They’ve helped raise money for three skate parks, in Lansing, Grand Rapids, and a third in Novi. Although the Novi skate park has since closed, in the fall of 2008 they opened the Modern Skate Park in Royal Oak, MI, an 80,000 square foot facility with over an acre of skateable terrain. They’ve had a professional skateboarding team, Team Modern, since 1985, which has been featured on ESPN and performs all over Michigan in contests and doing charity events. Several of the team members are sponsored by Nemesis skateboards.

Modern Skate & Surf was ranked Best Bike/Skate Shop in 2004 and Best Skate Shop in 2006 by Metro Times. We were also named best Snowboard Shop and Skate Park in 2006 and 2008, plus Best Skate Park in 2007 and 2008 by Real Detroit Weekly. Modern was also authorized "Awesome" by High Cascade Snowboard Camp.
