About me:
Modern Skate & Surf was founded in 1979 in Royal Oak, Michigan. It has since expanded to four locations, with additional business housed in Lansing, Novi and Grand Rapids, however the Novi store has since closed. When the store opened, it specialized in roller skates and ice skates. It soon expanded to include in-line skates (and was one of the first thirty stores in the world to carry Rollerblade), snowboarding, wakeboarding, and skateboarding equipment.
Modern Skate & Surf stays active in the Michigan community by participating in and hosting many charity events. They’ve helped raise money for two skate parks, one in Lansing and one in Grand Rapids, and a third in Novi. Although the Novi skate park has closed there is a new one being built in Royal Oak as we speak so keep your eyes and ears open for that. They’ve had a professional skateboarding team, Team Modern, since 1985, which has been featured on ESPN and performs all over Michigan in contests and doing charity events. Several of the team members are sponsored by Nemesis skateboards.
Modern Skate & Surf was ranked Best Bike/Skate Shop in 2004 and Best Skate Shop in 2006 by Metro Times. We were also named best Snowboard Shop and Skate Park in 2006, and Best Skate Park 2007 by Real Detroit Weekly. Modern was also authorized "Awesome" by High Cascade Snowboard Camp.
