Unsigned rockers Modico (Latin for small or insignificant) defy their own moniker, bringing powerful shoegazey jams to the citizens of their adopted home town of Norman, Oklahoma. Modico's positive credo, based on the idea that little actions can make a big difference in the world, is reflected in a heavy helping of optimism—they aim to combat the hopelessness common throughout the world today. The fabulous juxtaposition of the flowing, yet somber mood of the music against the inarguably uplifting poetics is not only unlikely; it's a fresh, creative blend of indie rock that is uniquely Modico's.
Combining their ambitious motivations with their distinctive sound, Modico has grown dramatically since their 2003 formation. After relocating from Fort Worth, Texas, the band (Thomas Ketchersid—vocals, guitar; Cole Watkins—guitar; John Cope—bass; Toby Rozell—drums) came to appreciate their new close-knit town. After picking up a new drummer (Dillon Hayden) in 2006, the band has gone on to play with such national acts as the Polyphonic Spree, Midlake, Metal Hearts, Say Hi To Your Mom, Radiant, Plushgun, and Black Tie Dynasty. After parting ways with Thomas and Cole in early 2008, the band happily welcomed two new members (Stephen Olsen—guitar, and Joey O’Brien—keys) later that year. After playing over 120 shows throughout the US (including the Extreme Tour and CMJ Music Marathon in NYC in 2007), the foursome have established themselves as an explosive force in the pool of talented unsigned artists.
Modico currently has two self-released EPs available, as well as their first full-length album, Axe At My Feet. Presently, the band is writing new material, and hopes to unleash it in the months ahead. Chalk it up to their musical talent or positive outlook; but either way, Modico is headed for anything but a modico future.
