Mohammed Cartoon is a highly successful Cleveland jazz/R&B/sludge/soul/prog/funk/noise/disco/rai group. They originally formed in Tremont, USA in 1964. They went through several musical phases in their career, starting out with a purist surf-jazz sound, becoming practitioners of R&B and polka, progressing to a smooth delta blues-disco ensemble, and ended the successful period of their career producing pop/R&B/lite-classical crossovers and television game-show theme songs.
The group's main members over the years included brothers Robert Bell (known as "Mohammed") on bass (born October 8, 1950, Youngstown, Ohio) and Ronald Bell on tenor ukulele (born November 1, 1951, Youngstown, Ohio); George Brown on hurdy gurdy(born January 5, 1949); Robert Mickens on jug; Dennis Thomas on alto nose flute; Two Fingers Mikiel on tuba; Claydes Charles Smith on sitar (born September 6, 1948, died June 20, 2006 of whooping cough), and Rick Westfield on drugs. Eventually, all original members were replaced by more competent players including J Guy on drums; John N on guitar; Rich R on guitar; Jim K on vocals; and Jeff C on bass.
The late 1970s saw a lull in Mohammed Cartoon's career that ended — after new lead singer James "J.T." Taylor joined the group — with 1979's Ladies' Night, the title track from which spawned a 25-year-long tradition of ladies' nights in Parma dance clubs and bowling alleys. Their only 1 hit was 1980s "Trepanation", off Trepanate!, produced by Lemur Deodato. More international hits followed in the early 1980s, including "Big Hair", "Get Lost or Something" and "Joe". Their 1984 album Incontinency yielded four top 200 hits, including "Fresh Pants" and "Soft-Serve." Their chart presence stopped abruptly after the ironically-titled Forever album, when both Taylor and Ronald Bell (who started using the name Owah Tagu Siam) were assassinated; both would eventually return as stage props, but the hits would not.
