Mojácar Flamenco is a dynamic group of flamenco artists led by guitarist Stephen Dick and dance dynamo Katerina Tomás. Together, they offer a virtuosic tour-de-force in which music and dance weave together in tight interplay. Mojácar Flamenco offers flamenco concerts, workshops and classes, and lecture-demonstrations year-round, bringing the power and passion of flamenco to all audiences.
Mojácar Flamenco was formed in 1997 when Stephen and Katerina returned from an extended visit to an artists' retreat in the village of Mojácar on Spain's Mediterranean coast. While there, Stephen wrote much of the music that became Mojácar's core repertoire. Since then, the group has toured the U.S. and Canada, performed in Spain, collaborated with artists from all over the world, and released a CD featured on NPRs Morning Edition.
Stephen is an award-winning guitarist and composer with an M.A. in music composition. He studied flamenco guitar with Paco Arroyo in Los Angeles, and with Manolo Sanlucar, Jose Antonio Rodriguez, "El Carbonero," and Manolo Franco in Spain. He performed in the Sur Jerez Flamenco Competition in 2001. His guitar pieces and compositions are published by Berbén of Italy and Columbia Music. He has received numerous grants and awards for his work, including grants from Meet the Composer, ASCAP, the Spanish Ministry of Culture, and an L.A. Treasures Award.
Katerina is a recognized flamenco artist in the United States and Spain and has an M.A. in Dance from UCLA. She wrote the master's thesis: "The flamenco music and dance lineage of Federico Garcíá Lorca and La Argentinita" while at UCLA. She has studied flamenco dance with giants in the field, including with the great Gypsy artist Rosa Montoya, with Juan Parra, Joaquin Grilo, Eva "La Yerbabuena" and Inmaculada Aguilar, and with the Gypsies of El Sacromonte de Granada in Spain. She studied flamenco singing in Spain with Aroa Cala Soto of El Puerto de Santa Maria. The recipient of numerous awards and honors, she received 6 awards from the Spanish Ministry of Culture, most recently for two incredible dance/theater music productions at the Madrid Theatre: "Cantan los Fuegos/the Fires sing: celebrating the music and poetry of Manuel de Falla and Federico García Lorca," and "Mojácar at the Madrid." She also received an L.A. Treasures Award in 2004 for "Cantan los Fuegos."
