  • Bio

Continuing the bluesy musical mayhem of Oakland's "Swingin' Turbans", Jeff "GB" Bigelow & Mike Bowman founded Mojo Deluxe in 1996. Pal Charlie Stockley, a college roomate of Mike's twin brother Steve (orig, drumer in Countiung Crows & Third Eye Blind) gleefully joined on drums. The group was rounded out, in spectacular fashion, by budding chantuese/blues belter Hillary Hightower, who just happened to be Jeff's enthusiastic and talented baby sister. The fun really gelled when keyboard/recording ace Adam Rossi and sax maniac Doug "TT" Cross oozed onto the stage. Holding forth monthly at Oakland's venerable Kingfish Cafe & Bar, the Mojos branched out to become heavies on the Bay Area blues-R&B-funk-party scene. Bandstands included Eli's Mile High Club, Bluesville in Jack London Sq.; and the Boom Boom Room, Biscuits & Blues, and Slim's in SF. The erstwhile ski bums also entertained Tahoe revelers regularly at Truckee's Bar of America. The aggregation was later augmented in horny (homely?) fashion by "Charlie "T-Bone" Wilson and sub drummer/recordist/music encylopedia Clayton Call. Kevin White luckily lowered his standards enough to replace Mike on bass when he toddled off to southern Oregon. Kevin and Adam have since graced the ensembles of pop luminaries like Luce and Chuck Prophet. Three CDs and ten years later, the players had grown up and gotten real jobs, forsaking dreams of Hollywood (or at least Burbank) stardom. Jeff became an auteur with his "Big Trouble" project, Adam coalesced Adam Rossi Music studio in SF, T-Bone founded Sonic Zen Records in Berkeley, and Doug burdened the lineups of Quake City Jug Band, Compared To What, the Lost Cats, and Zap Guru. But they all still play together at occasional reunion jams and parties, like when Mike descends from Oregon. Dream about us often! (Sadly, Charlie isn't with us any longer, at least physically, having finally succumbed at age 38 in his valiant defiance of the monster called Cystic Fibrosis. If you knew him, do him and his brethren a favor by updating your organ donor arrangements - thanks!)

Goodtime Washboard 3: the "Oakland" song is inspiring to anyone who's proud of, or just curious about, this great, funky city...
