Although you may not recognize the name, by now you’ve probably heard the voice. East Harlem rapper/singer/songwriter (“you can never have too many slashes in your name,” he laughs) Mojo The Cinematic has spent the past year putting the finishing touches on two projects that could catapult him to the notoriety he’s been working for during his decade-plus in the rap game.
The first project, Day In Day Out, is the 2nd LP from his band Dujeous, who have quietly become the go-to live act in the NYC indie scene due to their amazing live shows and lushly produced debut album (2004’s City Limits). The other project is the first solo effort from the triple-threat performer. Titled Blacademic, the record boasts production from producers Southpaw, The Audible Doctor, Omen, Just-One, and of course, Dujeous.
“Dujeous have always been into pushing the boundaries of what people think hip-hop is or what it should be, so with my solo I just want to even take it a step further,” says Mo.
And that he does. At 9 tracks deep, Blacademic takes the listener through so many different styles that it’s hard to remember that you’re listening to just one man. His cascading, soul-flavored tunes (Back to You, The Line) bump shoulders with golden age boom-bap (Analyze This, B.R.O.S) on the disc, and he even gets to shoehorn in some tracks that defy categorization (like the Beach Boys-assisted God Only Knows)
“I’ve always listened to so many different types of music, and I always found it natural that I would sing and rap the way I do. When I spit I get a rush onstage, and when I sing, I just let it take me to that next level.”
Other artists have taken note of The Cinematic’s vocal game. Last year, Mojo graced UK pop-princess Lily Allen’s remix of her smash hit Smile courtesy of Grammy-winning producer Mark Ronson. This year, Immortal Technique invited him to guest-star on Reverse Pimpology , a track from The 3rd World which has reached 10 on Billboard’s Independent Album Chart. That song would become one of the project’s 1st singles, and has quickly garnered Mojo a lot of attention from fans and labels alike.
Now finally poised to step into a bigger spotlight this year, the self proclaimed “child of the 80’s” says, “There was never a “plan b”. I always knew that I was born to perform, and I just keep on doing it because I know that I’m entertaining people. That’s what I want to make my mark as…not as a rapper, not as a singer, but as an entertainer. I make good music, and if you don’t like what I do then maybe it’s just not for you.”
With the 2 albums set to be released in late ’08, and a handful of high profile cameos already committed to tape, this looks to be a busy year for the soulful NY native. His plan? “Hold on and enjoy the ride. I’ve already seen a lot of the world on the strength of my music, and I can’t wait to see some more.”
