  • Bio

Molly Thomason is firing on all creative cylinders. Thomason has had an action packed 12 months – due largely to the release of her sophomore recording Beauty Queen. A record with an undeniable pop sensibility showcasing a great variety of influences, from the doo-wop vibe of "Shine in the Dark" to the Folk/Jazz heart-tug of "Amsterdam", Beauty Queen showcases intelligent and perceptive songwriting with a sophistication of lyric and melody that is unexpected in one so young. Accolades began last fall when Thomason received award nominations from Music Nova Scotia for Female Artist and Folk Recording of the Year. These were followed quickly with the award for Young Performer of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. In 2012, Molly received two ECMA nominations for Beauty Queen, was recognized as one of Canada's Top 20 Under 20 by Youth In Motion, won the She's the One Competition at the Ottawa Bluesfest, and has just received a Music Nova Scotia award nomination for Female Artist of the Year. Thomason's writing career is also gaining momentum – she's achieved finalist status with the John Lennon Songwriting Competition and semi-finalist status in the International Songwriting Competition this year, along with a second nomination from Music Nova Scotia for SOCAN Songwriter of the Year with co-writer Carleton Stone for their song "Never Felt A Thing". This fall will see the release of a Joel Plaskett produced duet version of "Never Felt A Thing" with Stone, and performances in the Toronto area. Not one to rest on her laurels, 18 year-old Thomason is just putting the finishing touches on her third full-length release as she starts her freshman year at the University of Toronto. Produced by John Angus MacDonald (The Trews) and mixed by Gordie Johnson (Grady, Big Sugar), her newest release promises to be an exciting step in the evolution of Molly Thomason. • Influences

My biggest influence, not gonna lie, has probably always been Avril Lavigne. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with her latest stuff, but the first two albums were amazing. My second biggest influence is Bob Dylan. My dad is a huge Dylan buff and he's almost always playing in either our car or house. I've been influenced by a lot of bands in the punk/emo style of music including: Green Day, Blink-182, Sum 41, Hawthorne Hights, Kill Hannah, Silverstein, All Time Low, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco and Billy Talent. Recently, I've been listening to more indie/rock stuff such as: Death Cab for Cutie (LOVE THEM.), Ani DiFranco, Tegan and Sarah, Bright Eyes, Dallas Green/City and Colour, Elliott Smith, Jack Johnson, The Dresden Dolls, Regina Spektor, Metric, Hey Ocean! and Fountains of Wayne. I'm also big into musicals. My two favourites are Rent and Wicked. And, although its not a musical, a film with original music in it that I really love is Once. .. .. .. ..
