WHAT IS SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME?
Shaken Baby Syndrome is more common than you might think. It occurs when an infant or small child is shaken or thrown into the air too roughly. Instead of rocking an infant who can't stop crying, the caregiver shakes the baby resulting in brain damage. What actually happens is the child's head rotates uncontrollably because the neck muscles are not yet developed and provide little support. The movement makes the skull move around so much that blood vessels and the nerves of the brain rupture and the brain tissues tear. When the brain hits the sides of the skull, it causes bruising and bleeding. Of course the injury is more when the child's head is hit against a hitting a wall or a crib mattress. The brain then swells and puts pressure on the skull, which causes blood vessels to be compressed.
Many SBS victims do not show any external signs of trauma and therefore go unnoticed. If they are noticed, the child must be taken to the hospital immediately.
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms according to the National Center of Shaken Baby Syndrome are: · Lethargy / decreased muscle tone · Extreme irritability · Decreased appetite, poor feeding or vomiting for no apparent reason · Grab-type bruises on arms or chest are rare · No smiling or vocalization · Poor sucking or swallowing · Rigidity or posturing · Difficulty breathing · Seizures · Head or forehead appears larger than usual or soft spot on head appears to be bulging · Inability to lift head

Did you know that shaking a baby for as little as 3 seconds can cause blindness, severe brain damage or even death? Don't think it can't happen to someone you love. Each year an estimated 1200-3000 cases of Shaken Baby Syndrome occur. 27% of cases are caused by non-relatives and others, such as babysitters, aunts, uncles and even close family friends! They, like so many others, had no idea shaking a baby can cause such damage. Help us spread the word! Tell everyone you know! You could save a life!
The problem with SBS is that it is widely unknown. 25-50% of parents are unaware of the risks of SBS. Does YOUR sitter know about SBS? We walk for premature babies, relay for cancer. Isn't it time we brought awareness to the leading cause of death in child abuse cases?

Bill S 1204 and Bill H.R. 2052 named The Shaken Baby Syndrome Act of 2007 was presented to Congress on April 25 & 26, 2007. To date, only 27 out of 535 members of Congress have signed on in support. HILLARY CLINTON IS NOT YET SUPPORTING THIS! If passed, it will mean $10,000,000 for education & prevention as well as support for victims already suffering! This is a fraction of the cost to care for these children AFTER they have been injured.
WHAT CAN YOU DO??
1) Call every congress member for your state.

2) Have all of your friends call too. The more the better, even additional calls for each state, but you can only call for your state.
3) Email Hillary until she signs on. She has a congress website, presidential website, and myspace where you can message her plus comment her asking for her support no matter what state you live in.
4) Email your congress members, myspace AND website.
5) Mail letters to your congress members. They will get the point if we keep contacting them. I have typed up letters that you are welcome to use.
6) Email all local media and ask them to do a story on SBS. If they already did one before, ask them to do it again with the updated information on the new bills that were just presented April 25, 2007. I have been on the news twice so far and if I can do, anyone can do it.
7) Email and write Oprah, Montell and Dr. Phil. They can bring awareness to MILLIONS within a 1 hours show. If a few thousand are inspired to make phone calls, it will not go un-noticed. Have your friends do this too.
8) Pass out flyers. Ask permission to post them on grocery store bulletin boards, mall bulletin boards, church, schools, bus stops, rest rooms, local businesses etc.
9) Write and email every presidential candidate. I think they are all on myspace. Send them messages and post comments urging them to "co-sponsor THE SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME PREVENTION ACT OF 2007".
10) Make a donation. Large or small, it will make a difference!
11) PRAY FOR ALL CHILD ABUSE VICTIMS & SURVIVORS!
I KNOW TAKING CARE OF CHILDREN IS STRESSFUL! PLEASE GET HELP IF YOU NEED IT! PUT THEM IN BED AND TAKE A BREAK, CALL A FRIEND, EMAIL ME, PLEASE JUST WALK AWAY!! DON'T TAKE A CHANCE OF LOSING YOUR TEMPER!

About me: My name is Michelle and I started this page to spread Kaleb's story of being a victim to Shakne Baby Syndrome and becoming a survivor.
