Check out the Preview for "The Wonderful World of MoMo Willy" airing this summer on www.itsmomowilly.com
With a voice like cognac sprinkled with gravel, MoMo Willy grabs and holds your attention. More than a spoken word artist, rapper, lyricist, or femcee, she is a philosopher with aphorisms frequently in rhyme. She offers a style fresh as baked bread, crafting pieces that infuse traditional hip-hop, performance poetry, and comedy. With sex appeal rivaling any in the game, MoMo Willy eschews the tired “lick me to like me” brand of rhyme that her contemporaries used to shoot up the charts and, ultimately, drop out of America’s consciousness just as quickly. “I can be the baddest with the phattest, but what else after that? Chicks need to step their game up,” MoMo Willy offers with a sneer.
This award-winning poet received critical and national acclaim when, amongst tens of thousands of entries, she was proclaimed Grand Prize Winner of Bryant McGill’s Poetry contest in January 2007 with her socio-political piece “It’s the Real (AIDS and Babies).” This, coupled with extensive internet buzz, thrust momowilly into the address books of many heavy hitters in the literary and entertainment industries, expanding her audience. Her oration of this piece and many others including “Dumb Ass Hoes,” “A Portion,” and “Science is Fiction,” has garnered her a huge fanbase worldwide. MoMo Willy has performed her pieces from the top to the bottom--Brooklyn to Miami--to standing ovations. In April 2007, after performing the year before, she was asked to host two events at the Pan-African Bookfest in Ft. Lauderdale. In September 2007, she contributed to a benefit CD "Justice for the Jena 6" with her solo track "The Jena 6 Catalyst" to raise money for the legal fund of those victims of social injustice.
Artists such as Jason Weaver, Mya, Cassidy, and the legendary Michael Jackson have applauded her sharp wit and artistry, commending her one-of-a-kind approach to life. When asked of her inspiration and influence, she offers, “The truth is what matters most...getting people to understand themselves and the world around them so that they can make better decisions and be better people all with a good laugh.”
After a myriad of creative and professional disappointments, MoMo Willy is stronger than ever, working on her album with a dedication to the truth and maintaining her uniquely offbeat sense of humor. Her new show"The Wonderful World of MoMo Willy" details her travels and struggles as a starving artist, enjoying the ride to the top with a grin. MoMo Willy is back and she has a whole lot to say.
