MONCADA ROCKS 2009 takes place on SATURDAY 27 JUNE at BRUDENELL SOCIAL CLUB, Hyde Park, LEEDS and is the fifth annual all-dayer benefit gig for Cuba. Moncada Rocks exists for two reasons: to raise money and to raise awareness. Check out the blogs to find out what Moncada Rocks 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 achieved, to find info on this year's line-up and to find other interesting info and news. Moncada Rocks 2009 is raising money for the 'Colombia Free Press Project', to provide practical necessities for the radical newspaper in Colombia, 'Voz' ('Voice') - a paper for which being a journalist means risking your life.
The Colombian press is tightly controlled; 'El Tiempo', the country's only daily national newspaper, is owned by the family of Vice-President Santos. Coverage of issues like human rights, the trade unions and progressive civil society initiatives is rare. Reporters who write about corruption, attacks on trade unionists, or collaboration between the army and paramilitaries are regularly murdered, making Colombia one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists.
The weekly newspaper VOZ ('Voice') is the only national opposition newspaper in the country. VOZ reports on labour disputes and strikes, violations of human rights, collusion between the army and paramilitaries and the initiatives carried out by the peace movement, students and indigenous organisations. Manuel Cepeda, the previous editor of VOZ, was elected to the Colombian Senate. He was subsequently assassinated by a military intelligence unit.

4th annual all-dayer benefit gig raising money to buy basic necessities (e.g. sanitary towels and blankets) for our sisters in jail in Colombia, unfairly imprisoned simply for being trade union activists.

* BOW & ARROW (fantastic stoner metal riffs from Liverpool, premiering in Leeds for the first time)

* CONQUEST OF STEEL (real NWOBHM metal with all the blood and props)

* SKULL BRANDED PIRATES (metal with expensive pirate outfits and side-splitting puns)
