    Monday Movies's Interests
GeneralJune 16 Urban Exploitation & Civil Rights

The Poor Pay More (NET 1965 b&w 60 minutes)

Incredible live-camera footage of Harlem in the mid-1960s. An expose on the exploitation of inner-city residents by retail credit “buy now, pay later” scams. Filmed on-location in supermarkets, furniture stores and ghetto apartments.

June 23 The Land

Portrait of a Coast. (Copro 1982 color 29 min)

Portrait of a Coast is an amazing documentary about why we are losing our coastline. It is beautifully shot and covers an issue that is affecting Oregon right now. Produced and filmed on Cape Cod.

Alaska's Silver Millions (Bernard Hubbard 1936 b&w 33 min)

A very interesting and well made fillm offering a detailed look at the geography of Alaska, the life cycle of the salmon, the salmon industry and operation of the canneries 72 years ago.

June 30

Riot Control (U S Army 1951 b&w 50 min)

This is a training film for soldiers to subjugate the population of a foreign country using force and chemical weapons. The trouble begins when an opposition leader riding his bicycle is run over and killed by an Army truck. The extravagant production utilizes thousands of actors on a film set the size of a city. Jaw-dropping action throughout the film.

July 7 Rock & Roll

The Girl Can't Help It (1956 Tashlin b&w 97 min)

Jayne Mansfield's first starring role, as the girlfriend of a racketeer who wants to transform her into a recording star. Great early rock-and-roll performances from the Platters, Little Richard, Eddie Cochran and Fats Domino. We will show a rare original television print in black & white, which looks much better than the restored color version now on video.

Destination Earth (Amer. Petroleum Inst. 1957 Technicolor)

Der Blau Dunst (German language) (NFBC 1965 color)

July 28: Walk in My Shoes (ABC 1961 B&W)

Twice nominated for an Emmy, once for best documentary and again for best script, this is a compelling film about the discrimination that faced Black Americans in the early 1960s, before the Civil Rights Act was passed by Congress. Outstanding photography and editing.

August 4: The Exiles (1961 B&W)

A new restored version of this film was released and began screening in Manhattan theaters two weeks ago. The print we will show is a very rare original 1961 print made by the filmmaker for a university over 45 years ago, enabling our film series to screen The Exiles before restored version arrives at commercial theaters in Portland. Our print needs no restoration, it is a tack sharp black & white vintage print in excellent condition. The film is about Indians living in the ghettos of Los Angeles. Check the rave New York Times review. All of this movie was filmed on the streets of Los Angeles, in neighborhoods that dont exist anymore. Drinking and driving, fighting, gambling, bars and back rooms are beautifully photographed.

The ExilesFree admission • Show starts at 9pm • All ages welcome!

Tonight is Gonna Rock the Hiz-ouse!

August 27, 2007 is the Best of the Season from Monday Movie Night. If you missed any of the Monday Movie series, this is your chance to see the best films shown this summer. Tonight you will see:

Scrub Me Mama With a Boogie Beat, banned black soundie from the 1930's. Possibly the most racist thing seen in Portland since Coon Chicken on Sandy Blvd. closed it's doors. Features cotton-picking, watermelon-eating and a guy napping in a swamp with flies swarming on him.

Are You Popular? 1940's mental hygiene film that explains why parking with boys may make you think you're popular, but in reality you're just a cheap slut.

Stop That Tank! WWII Disney-produced war propaganda film. Animated, yet frightening.

And a never shown before bonus from Tom:

Hitler's Hotties! 1930's Nazi-made German stag film. See titties and swastikas on the same reel. The Mississippi Station may not appreciate it, but you certainly will!

Monday Movies will be moving to a more winter-appropriate venue soon to start another season of Monday Movies. If you'd like to be emailed a calendar of the upcoming Fall/Winter schedule once it is available, please send your request to mondaymovies at aol dot com.

August 20, 2007 Monday Movie Night will screen:

Unidentified Flying Objects, (Clarence Greene, 1956, 92 minutes) The first flying saucer documentary produced, by a director noted for his offbeat style and OCD-level concern for accuracy. Filmed in real government radar rooms with the cooperation of the military. Features the well-known incident when US Army jet Red Dog One was tracked and was surrounded by UFOs over Washington DC.

There are only two Mondays left in the Summer series.

Monday Movies will be moving to a more Winter-appropriate venue after next week. If you'd like to be emailed a calendar of the upcoming Fall/Winter schedule once it is available, please send your request to mondaymovies@yahoo.com.

See movies under the stars as you view some of the finest documentary and educational films salvaged from the 20th century. The show begins at sunset, on the patio of Mississippi Station in North Portland. Local media historian and author Tom Robinson will introduce this 16mm print from his collection and play it on a vintage projector. See these original films the way they were meant to be seen, on a real projector, on a real screen, and drunk.

August 1, 1981, MTV brings the music video into the homes of Middle America.
October 7, 1952, American Bandstand launches the first live music TV program geared to teenagers.
January 1941, the Soundie makes its debut in pre-War US bars, diners and roadhouses.

Soundies were three-minute black and white mini-musical films that recorded the American music, dance, fashion and social history of their time. Made to be played on a self-contained coin-operated 16mm rear-projection machine, they covered all genres of music, and included swing, big bands, jazz, blues, country and western, hillbilly music among others. More than 1800 of the Soundies mini-musicals were made during their brief peak of popularity in the 1940’s.

Tonight, July 30, 2007, Monday Movies will bring you over 20 original vintage Soundies, including many rare reels of black American Jazz and blues performances unavailable anywhere else.

Join us for an evening of musical greats such as Cab Calloway, Ray Charles and Spike Jones. The show begins at sunset, on the patio of Mississippi Station in North Portland. Local media historian and author Tom Robinson will introduce each 16mm print from his collection and play it on a vintage projector older than you are. See these original films the way they were meant to be seen, on a real projector, on a real screen, and drunk.

July 23 is Photographers Week at Monday Movie Night.

This week's schedule:
The Photographer (Willard Van Dyke, 1947, black & white, 25 min)
Edward Weston was one of the most influential photographer of our time. This film was made by his close friend Willard Van Dyke in 1948, ten years before his death.

Ansel Adams, Photographer (Larry Dawson, 1958, black & white, 20 min)
Get up close and personal with Ansel Adams as he works the magic. In this rare film you join him as he sets out for a shoot in his station wagon.

Developing the Negative (US Army)
Learn a valuable skill that doesn't involve violence from our own US Army in this instructional gem.

Don't forget, next Monday, July 30, Monday Movies will present Soundies of the 1940's. Many rare reels by black musicians in this one.

July 9 is Corporate Propaganda Week at Monday Movie Night. As part of the evening this week, host Tom Robinson will speak about the wonders of Technicolor.

This week's schedule:
Miracle Healers (Don Como, 1978, color, 60 minutes)
One year before Jim Jones tended bar for the final time in Guyana, he participated in this interesting little film about psychic surgery. This week, the Mississippi Station will offer a signature cocktail in honor of the event. I'm not saying what the secret ingredient is. It's a surprise.

Destination Earth (American Petroleum Institute, 1957, Technicolor, 8 min.)
Animated for those of you who have ADHD or will be stoned.

Telephone Manners (US Post Office, 1972, color, 10 minutes)
I'm not certain how the Post Office fancies itself an expert on manners in any medium, but apparently they decide to encroach on another public services' territory in this instructional film.
