I guess I could write about myself in third-person, but that seems odd as we all know that I am, indeed, the one writing this...
I was born in Berlin, Germany & am of German & Portuguese/Cape Verdean descent (that's descent, not dissent; the latter came later)...We moved to the States when I was 4 & I started training for professional dance until U2 woke me up to a suffering world & made writing music & changing the world seem possible, so that became the direction of my dreams.
I write from my deepest passions & longings -- God, love, peace, truth, compassion, wonder, hope.
I'm committed to oppressed animals & humans & raising awareness of their sufferings, hopefully inspiring people to do something about it, or think differently about their world.
I'm interested in people -- what they think, what they feel, the things they've experienced that have made them who they are. I believe we can change the world for good. I believe books, music, film & art are the means to change things...that, & real relationships between people who aren't afraid of being vulnerable & exposing their deepest, truest selves. I also believe you can gather a lot about people by perusing their bookshelves, music, & dvd collections, so if I'm ever at your place preoccupied with those things, it's not because I'm nosey, I'm just trying to get to know you. :)
Here are a few of the things I love: LOVE (which hugely involves Mark Harrison a.k.a. Punky Gelado), hope, grace, peace, transparency, contemplation, quiet, books, poetry, writing, animals, people who are nice to animals, relief organizations, pianos, movies that stretch the mind & deepen the heart, photography, art (especially Pre-Raphaelite), beauty, the ocean, trees (especially cherry blossoms in spring & weeping willows), birds, flowers, puppies, rainbows, castles, old cathedrals, bridges (tangible & intangible), healing, seeing elderly couples still holding hands after decades of being married, being immersed in water, autumn leaves, the sound of seagulls, fireworks, roller coasters, bright colors, snow, snowglobes, Europe, candles, swings (especially those swing rides at carnivals), djembes, fireflies, the color of people's eyes, creative souls, butterflies, the color purple, sleeping, traveling, learning/discovering, products & people that are kind to animals & the earth, the stars, twilight, dusk, watermelon, hugs, smiling, painting, making bracelets & necklaces, vegetarians, coffee houses, Christmas lights, walking in forests, children's laughter, architecture, people's birthdays, reading scripture--especially Psalms, Isaiah & the book of John, encouragement, bookstores (especially Powell's City of Books!), libraries, dictionaries, thesauri, old family photo albums, recycling, sunshine, calligraphy, warm breezes blowing through my hair, staring at the sky, fairies & fairie tales, paisley, long hair, dread locks, silver, tropical things (places, scents, photos), Merchant Ivory Productions, Putumayo world music, dancing, The Lord of the Rings, deep/vulnerable/meaningful/thought-provoking conversations ( & people), laughing, theatre (performing & watching), quotes, pens, aromatherapy, raw foods, selflessness, gentleness, kindness, compassion, stillness, spending time with people I love & care about. What I don't like: bullies, fakeness, lies, adultery, deception, apathy, shopping malls, fast-food conglomerates, consumerism, television (except documentaries & very old shows like 'The Honeymooners'), gluten, shallow myspace flirtations & cold, sideways rain. I dream of someday having my own piano & a puppy.
It may keep your heart from shrinking back, to consider that death is necessary to fit you for the full enjoyment of God. Whether you are willing to die or not, there certainly is no other way to complete the happiness of your soul. Death must do you the kind office to remove this veil of flesh—this animal life which separates you from God—before you can see and enjoy him fully. "While we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord." And who would not be willing to die for the perfect enjoyment of God? I think one would look and sigh, like a prisoner, through the grates of this mortality—"O that I had wings like a dove, then would I fly away and be at rest!" Indeed most men need patience to die; but a saint, who understands what death will introduce him to, rather needs patience to live. On his deathbed he should often look out and listen to his Lord's coming; and when he perceives his dissolution to be near, he should say, "The voice of my beloved! Behold he comes, leaping over the mountains, skipping over the hills!" -John Flavel- (puritan divine)
